Extremely pleased to share our PNAS paper, which solves a century-old mystery..!
Young crowded locusts are black and yellow, signalling to potential predators - "Leave me alone!"
At sexual maturity, swarming males turn yellow again - but why? (1/4)

Congrats to @Darron_Cullen for an amazing example of tenacity and collaboration. Project originated almost 15 years ago in Sydney! Working with @GilRosenthal made sure the locust story was placed in the proper sexual selection context.
pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.22… An adult perspective: Juvenile desert locusts express density-dependent warning coloration to predators. Adult males do it all over again - but as a warning to other males! @Darron_Cullen @eatlikeanimals @NSF_BPRI
Way to go, @AshleyTessnow! Valuable new fall armyworm paper. Stay tuned for more cool new FAW findings coming up.
The second chapter of the PhD is now published in @PeerJLife! Here we describe four new markers to differentiate C- and R- strain fall armyworms. @TheSwordLab peerj.com/articles/12195 #AgriculturalScience #Entomology #EvolutionaryStudies #Genomics #MolecularBiology
