Many of my Slough constituents and I have followed Jagtar Singh Johal’s case with deep concern. He’s been released on bail in India after 9 long years, but his distressed family wants to see him back home. The case has gone on for far too long and needs to be swiftly resolved.

British national Jagtar Singh Johal was finally granted bail earlier this month. But his ordeal is far from over. With eight outstanding cases still hanging over him and bail conditions requiring him to surrender his passport, Jagtar remains trapped in India, thousands of miles from his home and family in Dumbarton. For 9 long years, Jagtar has been languishing in a foreign prison in what the UN has confirmed is arbitrary detention. Nine years cannot become ten. His bail must be the catalyst that finally brings Jagtar safely home.

The Sikh Press Association is devastated to learn of the callous murder of anti-drug activist Parminder Singh Jhota today in Mansa (Punjab). Sikh PA first covered Jhota in 2023, as a victim of torture for exposing Punjab's police-narco network. Our prayers are with his family.

Recent reports of racially and religiously aggravated incidents involving Sikhs on public transport and in public spaces have highlighted a serious concern: too many incidents of hate go unreported.

At least four incidents of anti-Sikh hate -including one targeting a child- were carried out by the same man against dastaar (Sikh turban) wearing men on the same day (08.10.26) in East London (UK) this week, local Sikh groups report. The man (a black male, likely in his 20s)...

Appalled video and reports circulating of harassment of a Sikh man at Newbury Park Station and other Sikh men. Council Leader @KamRai7 and I have pressed police & authorities for urgent attention and support for those affected. Religious hatred has no place here!

I’m aware that in the past day a man has physically and verbally accosted at least 4 different turban wearing Sikhs including a child. Possibly for social media. The police are aware of the racially aggravated nature and investigating. Please report any instances to 999.

1/ Jaggi’s 9 yr bail delay doesn’t prove Sikh lobbying is “powerless and useless”. It exposes the power imbalance British Sikhs are up against as a minority community competing with a UK-India relationship driven by trade, security, diplomacy. That’s a political reality.
The only victory here is Jaggi’s and his family’s. His strength and commitment to Sikhi and his fellow poltical prisoners is inspiration. His family, his in-laws standing by him shows their character. Coming out of prison his first words were for the release of Sikh poltical prisoners. And bail is a major relief to him, it improves his conditions and ends his confinement, and that should be celebrated. But it’s far from victory. In the context 9 years to get bail demonstrates how powerless and useless Sikh poltical lobbying is as a strategy for harm reduction. Jaggi was presented as a helpless victim, the context of fellow Sikh poltical prisoners was erased from the campaign, Jaggis own politics was erased yet none of that gained him the slightest sympathy. The MPs now celebrating this did nothing. Multiple prime ministers, foreign secretaries, did nothing. Sikh orgs made noise but ultimately passed the time and failed to build a meaningful campaign around Sikh poltical prisoners, Khalistani, Sikh resistance. That introspection is missing and victory discourse devoid of context and reflection on reality just allows people to pat themselves on the back.

1/ There are moments in long campaigns when we should recognise a partial victory. Jagtar Singh Johal walking out of an Indian prison on bail after almost 9 years is one of them. It does not end his legal ordeal or erase the years taken from him. 🧵

After 9 years, Jagtar Singh Johal has walked out of prison on bail. This is significant for Jagtar, his family & the relentless #FreeJaggiNow campaign that refused to allow his case to be forgotten. Bail is not freedom, the objective has always been to bring him home to Scotland.
