Some news from the editors 💙

ALT Solid blue background with text: “The Shallow Ends will be taking a hiatus from June-August. Recent months have been extremely difficult for many reasons, personal & professional. It has always been our mission to publish & uplift the voices of poets, & for now that means taking a moment to recharge, regroup, & refocus so that we may continue to bring you the work that you love. We appreciate your support & look forward to returning in the fall.”

Anyway. I wrote this poem about a boy I loved who was an activist whode car was shot up at a protest in 2015 and I’m thinking about him today just like I’m thinking about all of us who really thought our work in 2014-17 was going to change the world. Today is hard.

“of his palm gripping a broken caracol I’d tossed aside because—spiral staircase, exposed ribcage—it was broken / and he with his tiny white teeth / insists I take it and I take it because
it is now because of him, perfect”

“listen. I want to hear him call me daughter.
Perhaps this, my most selfish wound. When it opens,
I drag my name to the shed and shoot it
for my father, who I love”

I heard him toeing softly down our staircase

And I was there, surely. I was so brutally there,
though the opposite was also true” @burritotheif
