Rob (The RevOps Hitman) Turley retweeted
For more than 10 years, I've been talking about the first principles of business on video.
And I've brought the receipts.
Long before the language of Revenue Architecture became familiar, I was explaining something that I had learned across my corporate career, and thankfully was taught by Mark Reval, as business obvious…
Know the market you sell to.
Not theoretically.
Actually know it.
Who they're working with.
What they're using.
What they like.
What they don't like.
What the gap is.
What would make them change.
Who is involved.
What the commercial reality looks like.
And critically:
When might that change?
That's where Catalogue the Market™ came from.
Because knowing the market isn't enough.
You need to segment that intelligence by timing.
Now.
Soon.
Later.
Not yet.
Unknown.
A buyer who isn't ready today isn't a dead lead.
They're a piece of market intelligence with a potential future timestamp.
That's Timing Intelligence™.
Then comes the question most organisations still struggle with:
Who inside the organisation needs to know what we've learned?
Sales needs to know.
Marketing needs to know.
Product needs to know.
Customer Success needs to know.
Leadership needs to know.
Because the account doesn't stop being an organisational asset when Sales closes it.
The intelligence should travel with it.
That's Close the Feedback Loop™.
And when it doesn't?
You get the problems we've all seen.
Marketing creates campaigns based on assumptions instead of what buyers are actually saying.
Product receives isolated feature requests instead of patterns from the market.
Sales has conversations that nobody else learns from.
Customer Success inherits a contract without understanding the commercial relationship behind it.
And then we wonder why the customer experience starts breaking after the sale.
Think about something as basic as a Communication Plan.
How often are we seeing the client?
Who needs to be involved?
Who are the stakeholders?
What does reporting look like?
What does success look like?
What happens when something changes?
What has actually been promised?
If Customer Success doesn't know those things, we've created a gap between what was sold and what can actually be delivered.
That's not a CS problem.
That's an architectural problem.
And it goes further.
What happens when Sales doesn't know the commercially viable options of the organisation?
They sell something the business can't service profitably.
They create expectations Product can't fulfil.
They create delivery requirements nobody planned for.
They create a customer relationship that starts upside down.
Again:
That's not simply a Sales problem.
It's circuit failure.
This is why I have always described business through circuitry.
The market generates the signal.
The organisation captures it.
The intelligence moves.
Each function acts on what it needs to know.
The organisation learns.
Then it goes back to the market.
And the circuit closes.
For years, I was explaining this without the language the market now has for it.
And one person who understood it unusually early was Rob Turley.
When Rob and I went Down the Rabbit Hole in 2022 to talk about Closed Circuit Selling, he understood that I wasn't really talking about another sales tactic.
He understood the system.
He understood the interconnection.
He understood that quality of commercial intelligence mattered more than simply increasing activity.
And more recently, I've watched Rob continue developing his own RevOps thinking around targeting, cross-divisional alignment, Marketing, Sales, CS and retention.
He saw the shape of the problem early.
Before the market had the language for it.
That's why I have enormous respect for him.
And now look at where we are.
The market has changed.
AI has accelerated execution.
RevOps has matured.
Marketing, Sales, Product and Customer Success are being forced to confront the consequences of operating from different versions of reality.
Do you actually know your market?
Does that intelligence move through your organisation?
Do you know when the market might move?
Does Customer Success know what Sales actually sold?
Does Product know what the market is repeatedly asking for?
Does Marketing know why buyers aren't buying?
Does Leadership know what the market is saying before it appears in the numbers?
That's why I don't describe Closed Circuit Selling™ as another sales methodology.
Revenue problems are often architecture problems.
Catalogue the Market™
Know what the market is actually telling you.
Timing Intelligence™
Know when that intelligence may become commercially relevant.
Close the Feedback Loop™
Move the intelligence across the organisation.
Architecture Over Frameworks™
Build the system so learning compounds.
For more than a decade, I've been talking about these principles in public.
The market didn't suddenly become different.
The market finally started having the vocabulary to describe what was already happening.
And that's the thing about first principles.
They don't become true because the market discovers them.
The market discovers them because they were true all along.
Closed Circuit Selling™
Not a sales process.
Not another funnel.
Not another framework.
Commercial circuitry built around continuous market intelligence.
People don't realize just how powerful it is to admit you don't know something, or how one can carefully curate their network to fill their gaps, which also provides a unique advantage! 💪🏻

Does anyone have suggestions as to what I should be looking for or do when assessing home office spaces? 🤔
