As an athlete, it’s your job to take care of your body. When it comes to exercising, eating healthy, and recovery, you don’t have a choice. You have to do these things if you want to succeed.

In 1987, Miami did something no school had ever done. They signed a deal with Nike to outfit every single sport on campus. The first university in America to do it.
They wore that swoosh for 27 years. Those were the years that built the legend. The swagger, the camo, the national titles, the teams everybody in the country loved to hate. That was Miami in its Nike era.
Then in 2015 they left, taking a 12-year Adidas deal worth around $90 million. About $6.5 million a year in cash. At the time it was the biggest apparel contract the athletic department had ever signed, and the longest deal Adidas had ever given a college program.
And then Miami stopped being Miami.
The Hurricanes spent most of that decade irrelevant. Not "The U." Just a program with great history and nothing current to point at.
In December 2021, Mario Cristobal left the University of Oregon to come home.
That detail matters more than it sounds. Oregon isn't just a Nike school. Nike is headquartered there, the company's founder built the athletic department into what it is, and no program in America is more tied to the brand. Cristobal walked away from the single most Nike-connected job in college football to take over an Adidas school that hadn't mattered in years.
Last season, Miami played for the national championship.
They lost that game to Indiana, but the point had been made. The Hurricanes were a real program again, recruiting at the top of the sport, back in the conversation every week.
Which brings us to this week.
Miami is going back to Nike. A 10-year contract worth more than $200 million, starting with the 2027 season. Around $20 million a year, roughly $13 million of it in straight cash, the rest in apparel.
That more than triples what Adidas was paying them.
Adidas made a counteroffer. It wasn't close enough.
Outside of Nike's unique arrangement with Oregon, this is believed to be the largest annual payout Nike has ever given a college program. The extra money is expected to go toward athletic department costs, NIL support, and possibly a new on-campus football facility.
Eleven years ago Miami left Nike because Adidas offered them more.
Now Nike is paying three times as much to get them back, because of what one coach built in four years.
As one radio host put it after the news broke, it isn't a stretch to say Mario Cristobal has been worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the University of Miami.
Cristobal hates when people say the U is back. He prefers to say the U is here.
Nike just paid $200 million to agree with him.
