Bingeing on The Diplomat, I was wrenched from my chair when I saw that the @royalsociety , of which I am a fellow, had removed their premises from Carlton House Terrace to Wrotham Park in Herts (Fig 1) not to mention Windsor Castle (Fig 2) looking rather like Burghley House.

I am ⅔ through transcribing my g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-dads will. He wrote it on 17 Mar 1540. That was the year Henry 8 annulled marriage to Anne of Cleves, married Catherine Howard & chopped off Thomas Cromwell head for scamming him into marriage with Anne.

He was called Christofer and is the oldest direct Marshall ancestor I have found. His wief was called Johanne.

“in the name of ours lords god” is easy enough on the first line. Interesting use of the lingering Germanic genitives with s on our and lord. It gets very opaque in places.

Today I read the 1540 will of my g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-gfather. Christofer begat Edward begat Edward begat Edward begat John begat Samewell begat John begat Joseph begat Samuel begat Thomas begat William begat Samuel begat Robert begat me. Christofer born 1480s.

39 yrs ago, at RAL, we worried whether our drift chambers, for the H1 experiment would survive pressure fluctuations in Hamburg. Paul Flower in our group, recorded the pressure during the hurricane night of 15-16 Oct. I think this is the lowest pressure ever recorded in England.

Continuing my research into Marshall ancestry, I have to brace myself when a family tree submitted by someone across the water, claiming to be a Marshall descendent, but inexplicably sharing the IQ of their President, posts their research without reading it through.

During my years as Prof of Physics, FRS, in Manchester, 1833 warehouse apartment, Fri lunch & evening circuit, I got to know 4 judges & 10 magistrates. How many would I trust to reach a fair verdict in jury-less trial? After careful consideration, I’d say less than 74.13%.

The news just ended on BBC and we are watching sheep dogs. They are unbelievable animals & I’ve known a few on my auntie’s farm. I would trust a sheep dog to make a fair decision in a jury-less trial. But definitely not a random chosen judge or magistrate.
