PT 2. There’s something special about getting to see a project come to life from start to finish. 🚢
For this Royal Caribbean PR box, we got to see the entire journey, from the initial concept and white sample, through production and print, to the finished box.

Simple guide to… What is a keyline?
If you’ve ever supplied artwork for packaging, a folded leaflet or a custom-shaped piece of print, you might have been asked to work from a keyline.
But what actually is it?
The easiest way to think about a keyline is like a cookie cutter.
Your artwork is the cookie dough, and the keyline is the cookie cutter showing exactly how the finished piece needs to be shaped.
A keyline acts as a technical guide for the artwork. It can show where the piece will be cut, folded, creased or glued, helping the designer understand exactly where everything needs to sit before it goes to print.
For example, imagine you're creating a 4-page folded DL leaflet. When you're looking at the artwork flat on a screen, the keyline shows where each page will sit and exactly where the folds will happen. This helps make sure important text, logos or images don't accidentally end up sitting across a fold or too close to an edge.
The same applies to something with a custom shape. If you're producing a display, piece of packaging or another item that needs to be cut into a specific form, the keyline shows the exact shape that needs to be cut.
Then we have bleed.
Your background colours and images shouldn't stop exactly at the cut line. Instead, they extend slightly beyond it. This extra artwork is called bleed and allows for the small amount of movement that can naturally happen during the cutting process.
Think back to the cookie dough, you want enough dough around your cookie cutter to cut out the full shape.
A keyline can also highlight print-free areas. For example, if part of a piece needs to be glued together, that area may need to remain free from ink so the adhesive can bond properly.
So a keyline isn't actually part of the finished design.
It's the blueprint sitting behind it, telling us:
Where to cut
Where to fold or crease
Where the artwork should sit
Where bleed is needed
Which areas need to stay print-free
It might just look like a collection of lines on a piece of artwork, but those lines are what help turn a flat design on a screen into a finished piece of print.
That's a keyline, without the print jargon. 🙌
Below you can see the keyline alongside the final 3D result👇
FSDUs are designed to do more than just hold products 👀
They give brands their own space in a busy retail environment, helping them stand out from everything else competing for attention.
These Hawaiian Tropic and Playboy FSDUs are two completely different designs, but both use the same principles:
→ Strong, recognisable branding
→ Product-specific spaces that keep everything organised
→ 360° branded areas that catch attention from different angles
→ A structure that brings the product and brand together in one display
When shoppers only have a few seconds to notice something, how a product is presented can make all the difference.
A good FSDU doesn’t just display the product, it helps sell it.
Ever wondered why the first thing you see can have such a big impact on what you think next? 👀
That’s the Anchoring Effect.
Basically, what we see first can affect how we see everything that comes after it.
In marketing, that first “anchor” could be a price, an offer, a product or even a piece of signage and it can influence how everything that follows is perceived.
Another little bit of marketing psychology that shows just how much thought can go into what we see every day. 🧠

We couldn’t let this trend pass without giving it a TPI spin 💅
There’s a lot more that goes into print than what you see at the end. Behind every finished piece is an idea, a brief, plenty of creativity and a team working together to bring it all to life.
And the same goes for our marketing.
We want our content to show the personality behind the business, share a little more of what happens behind the scenes and, most importantly, have some fun with it along the way.
Because B2B can still be creative, interesting and full of personality.
And that’s what we call kinda chic :)

We love seeing creativity making an impact beyond the workplace 👏
A brilliant new addition to Kilcullen has brought together art, local heritage and community in one seriously impressive mural.
The project was commissioned by Kilcullen Community Arts, with the gable walls made available by Mick Heavey of Fitzpatrick & Heavey Homes, who is also Chairman of The Printed Image.
Created by artist Steve O’Donnell of All Out Design, the mural brings elements of Kilcullen to life through its bridge, the River Liffey, local wildlife, wildflowers and a few familiar symbols of the area.
It’s great to see a previously unused space transformed into something colourful that the whole community can enjoy, and apparently it’s already getting plenty of beeps and waves from passing traffic! And when the traffic into Kilcullen gets bad at least there’s something pretty to look at while you wait!
A fantastic example of what can happen when local business, creativity and community come together.
Well done to everyone involved 👏

When the “content creation” gets slightly out of hand… 😂☀️
In their defence, the lighting was good and it was technically for marketing purposes.
Just another very productive day in the office 👀
Ever wondered what actually makes a retail display stand out? 👀
We recently worked alongside Prestige Beauty Ireland to create these Free standing display units for Hawaiian Tropic and Playboy. Two completely different brands, but both designed with the same goal: to grab attention and make the product easy to shop.
From bold branding and strong colour choices to product placement, raised elements and custom shelving, every detail has a purpose.
In this video, I’m breaking down some of those details and explaining why they work from both a print and marketing perspective.
Because a great FSDU doesn’t just hold products, it helps sell them.

The polished videos made it to the feed… now here’s what actually happened behind the scenes 😭🎬
Forgotten lines, spelling struggles, laughing at the worst possible time and a LOT of retakes 😂
Safe to say, the bloopers might be better than the actual videos.
Ever wondered what actually happens inside a print company? 👀
When people think of print, they often only see the finished product.
What they don’t see is the talented people behind it.
So we challenged some of the team at The Printed Image to explain their job as if they were talking to a 5-year-old. No jargon. No complicated explanations. Just a simple look at the roles that help bring every project to life.
We love giving people a behind-the-scenes look at the print industry, because understanding the process helps you appreciate everything that goes into creating great work.
Which role would you like us to explain next? 👇

Communication is everything...
Because sometimes two people can be trying to solve the same problem in completely different ways. 😂

Have you ever spent hours building IKEA furniture... and then felt oddly proud of it?
There's actually a psychological reason why.
It's called the IKEA Effect.
The more time and effort we put into creating something, the more we value it.
That's why brands use personalisation, customisation and interactive experiences to build stronger connections with their customers.
Sometimes, people aren't just buying a product.
They're buying the feeling of helping create it.
What brands do you think use the IKEA Effect best?

The Guaranteed Irish symbol is one you’ve probably seen countless times.
But do you know what it actually stands for?
It’s more than a logo. It represents businesses that support jobs, communities and sustainable enterprise across Ireland.
We’re proud to be a @guaranteed_irl member.

Walk into any supermarket or retail store, and you’ll see dozens of different display units.
Most people never think twice about them.
But every one has been designed with a specific purpose.
Some are built to encourage impulse purchases at the checkout. Others are designed to stop shoppers in their tracks, organise products, maximise shelf space or showcase a new product launch.
Understanding the difference isn’t just useful for people in the print industry, it’s valuable for anyone involved in marketing, retail or brand activation.
Here’s a simple guide to six of the most common retail display units you’ll come across:
- Counter Displays
- WOW Displays
- Case Tidies
- Prong Units
- Free Standing Display Units (FSDUs)
- Dump Bins
Each one serves a different role, but they all have the same objective:
Capture attention, improve the shopping experience and ultimately help products sell.
Next time you’re in a supermarket, take a look around. You’ll start noticing just how much thought goes into where products are placed and how they’re presented.
What’s your favourite type of retail display or is there another one you’d like us to explain in a future post?
