Mouse having a break (Mouse thinks it's well earned) for a couple of weeks so no brand new material. But she'll be RTing and commenting and will be back. Forget her not!馃惌
Nave through chancel arch #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire
St. Mary's church in the tiny rural hamlet of Kettlebaston, Suffolk. With almost no people and very little traffic the church yard is wonderfully peaceful
Nave of Norman origin, rebuilt 1343 with the addition of the west tower & chancel #SteepleSaturday
North porticus, north east corner #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire
Stone basin with moulded corners. Badly worn. Stem square section and is grooved with graffiti cross. No base or plinth. Basin and shaft weren't born together one pre-conquest the other Norman #FontsOnFriday
You can see more if it's broken...
Here you can see the stone courses corresponding to base and capital and the vertical and horizontal lines where the pilaster and string course have been hacked away #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire #StLaurenceDecoration
How are the arches made? Time to zoom in. A narrow course of masonry corresponds to the capital and base from which they're cut, the pilaster inserted into a vertical channel. The arch is cut in relief from stones above #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire #StLaurenceDecoration

Each elevation of the nave and chancel of the church of #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire is decorated with a blind arcade. There are two styles; solid arch (shown top) and circular strip of masonry (shown bottom). These in themselves vary slightly #StLaurenceDecoration
A lovely reminder. Mouse hasn't seen an example of this (from the ever wonderful @chartres_Fiona) in ages but it's a real Mouse favourite. Greensand and limestone goes so well together. This from #StMichaelCoombeBissett #Wiltshire TTM馃惌
The alternating colours of the limestone and sandstone blocks that make up the arch above the Norman south door at St John the Baptist, Tredington are very striking indeed.

A view three hundred years into the future. The decorated period window to the north of the chancel, church of the #HolyTrinityBradfordOnAvon
Chancel to nave #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire for #DoorwayThursday
Simple Saxon arch illuminated by two lights inserted C19 #StLaurenceDoorways (5/5)
North porticus to nave #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire for #DoorwayThursday
Two orders of arch. Left side preserves some of the original detail including a reeded respond. The marks are just visible to the right where this detail was hacked away #StLaurenceDoorways (4/5)
Nave to north porticus #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire for #DoorwayThursday
Two orders of arch, probably with a common abcus. Hacked flush to allow wall to be lined and plastered when the building was a dwelling #StLaurenceDoorways (3/5)
North porticus #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire for #DoorwayThursday
Repairs to the right (facing) show two orders of arch, the outer projecting slightly from the inner. The vertical marks to the left show supports and abcus hacked flush to the wall #StLaurenceDoorways (2/5)
South of nave #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire for #DoorwayThursday
Jambs capped by projecting abacus stone with arch. Typically Saxon opening; tall and thin, abacus is single stone running through the entire depth of the wall, circular stilted arch #StLaurenceDoorways (1/5)
Nave #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire
Victorian, of course, but very impressive. A 3-bay common rafter roof with curved trusses, purlins and curved wind braces #Woodensday
Nave, south elevation #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire
A Saxon double splay single light contemporaneous with the original building? Mouse actually think not #WindowsOnWednesday
Chancel, south elevation #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire
Single light with circular head and deep splay. An external splay would tend to suggest a Saxon opening. Saxon lights were double splayed, internal and external and would be unglazed #WindowsOnWednesday
Chancel, south elevation #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire
From top; four bay blind arcade on piers with bases and capitals, string course, pilaster strip. circular headed single light with deep splay east of pilaster strip #PilasterStrip #WallsOnWednesday #WindowsOnWednesday
Time for a #NerdyMouseAlert. Look away now if you don't like minute technical detail. A pilaster strip sits in a channel in the wall. It may be laid with each stone course or cut in later #PilasterStrip #StLaurenceDecoration #WallsOnWednesday #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire
The vertical, very slight projection from this wall's surface is a pilaster strip or lesene (different from a pilaster which has a base and capital) #PilasterStrip. It is a feature of both Saxon and Norman architecture #WallsOnWednesday #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire

It's #MouseFollowersInHistoricalEvents. Today Mouse reach 1715 followers
In 1715 the Jacobite rising pitted the Old Pretender against newly enthroned King George I. George ascended due to the Act of Settlement 1701
[Mouse's followers oscillate so these are high water marks]
