As we depart this dumpster fire for BlueSky (@ TheGlazeProject.bsky.social), I will leave this article pinned here. This is the definitive article of who we are, how we got here, and why we do what we do.
Meet @TheGlazeProject, the AI lab behind Glaze and Nightshade, two prominent weapons in an artist’s arsenal against nonconsensual AI scraping. The lab wants to tilt the balance of power from Big Tech back to individual creators. But are their tools enough?technologyreview.com/2024/11…

Hi all. Hope you’re all voting in this critical election.
Officially writing to say that moving forward, we will not be checking twitter or posting news here. It is too much of a dumpster fire. Join us in bsky or IG.
We are also working on new invite system for webglaze.
If you’re on bsky, we’re @theglazeproject.bsky.social

The internet has been progressively diluted with AI-generated slop. Are medical records headed for the same fate?
🧵 I just published a perspective in @NEJM with @AdamRodmanMD and Arjun Manrai on why rushing AI into medical documentation could be a mistake.

Replying to @Engineering
From the bottom of my heart, I wish you a very messy bankruptcy.

Google is calling for UK copyright law to be changed to allow training AI models on copyrighted work without the need for a license.
All British creators should oppose this.
The creative industries account for 5% of UK GDP. Let's not destroy them by allowing AI companies to train highly scalable AI competitors on creators' work without permission.

Next time a generative AI company tells you training on people's work without permission is good for creators, show them this poll.
It's a poll of 4,274 songwriters, composers, and publishers in Australia & New Zealand, conducted in June 2024. And it shows how strong the feelings in the creative community are about this:
- 95% assert ©️ holders must be asked permission before training
- 93% say ©️ holders must be paid for training
- 96% want training data transparency requirements
- 93% want AI output to be labelled
- 82% are concerned AI music could stop musicians making a living
The idea that unlicensed, uncompensated training is somehow good for creators is a myth.

Regular reminder that ChatGPT is not a search engine but a word-association machine that randomly puts words together based on probability. It cannot think, it does not know. Your best source for information remains books.

Call me crazy but I want a society where everyone from the artist to the janitor is paid a living wage, where careers and creative hobbies aren’t being stolen by machines, where books and music and learning are celebrated instead of demeaned.
Sadly no. We remain overwhelmed and most requests for webglaze accounts sit unanswered. Unfortunately my plans for student helpers did not work out. Students disappear during summer & have too many other commitments in general. We're trying to design & build a better alternative

Hi everybody!! sorry for the radio silence over the last few weeks. Been out of the country on travel, then stuff with the house. Lots of exciting news coming in the next few weeks, and some we can't talk about for a few months. Almost caught up & will post more news this week!
A followup on the noisy upscaler attack and our test results posted online (glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/update…). Those results are from our own implementation. The authors of the attack just shared their code with us. We are running tests on their code now. Will update with new results.
Hi all. We wanted to share an update with you. Today there was a paper uploaded that showed a new attack against Glaze. The researchers shared their paper with us before releasing it, giving us a chance to read about their results. Let us share some results of what we found 1/🧵
Security tools like Glaze are never perfect and future proof. Like antivirus programs, firewalls, or spam filters, they need to be updated as new threats arise. This attack is creative and new, we have learned from this paper, and Glaze is stronger as a result. 4/🧵
Glaze v2.1 is available now to download (glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/downlo…), and will be integrated with Webglaze later this week. v2.1 also addresses several bugs and issues, and is also available for Intel-base Macs. Thanks for your patience. Fin/🧵
A note on WebGlaze account requests.
Since meta/IG's announcement 2 weeks ago, we have seen requests skyrocket, to 200+ per day from twitter and instagram EACH. It is simply more than we can process (despite having 2 students hired specifically to process webglaze requests).
Finally, if you have already gotten an invite from another platform, or one of our webglaze superusers, or email, then please go add a followup to any requests still in the queue to let us know. That will just save us a little time to help the next artist. Thanks
