This. THIS is a great photo. It tells a story, captures an important moment, and took 100x the thought of the other shots by people who just point their lenses at the person on stage and never take a moment to look around.

Can't believe my favorite horse turned 20 years old today. Click the link for my best photos from throughout Zenyatta 's career - from three days after her first start, to her offspring's races. Here's to many more birthdays for the Queen! rb.gy/5znixl

In my opinion, this is not a story about a Triple Crown winner being "drugged" in a qualifying race (though that is how mainstream media will play it up) but about how a regulatory agency secretly handled a case behind closed doors and has left the appearance of a coverup.

I don't even know what to say about Justify. Then again, I shouldn't be surprised. The CHRB has been covering for Bob Baffert for years. Any credibility these people had is shattered. Failed drug tests, cover-ups. No wonder people want racing to end.

I'm honored Jay wanted to use my photo. Wish it wasn't under bittersweet circumstances.

Ed does such a service to Los Al’s fans an players with this kind of stuff. Don’t ignore. Don’t hide. Don’t deflect. Explain.

Balan was the first guy in a long time to cover racing in an honest fashion, with a sense of journalistic integrity. Most racing media are tasked with being cheerleaders and promoters. It was a stark (and welcomed) contrast.

Sunday is my last day at BloodHorse. If you know anyone who might be able to use an award-winning turf writer, sports writer, or news reporter, please let me know.
Balan was one of only a few actual journalists in horse racing that had ethics and professionalism, looked all sides of a story, and didn't have a conflict of interest through relationships with horsemen and/or track management. Hope he finds an outlet that appreciates him. (2/2)
