“By all means, tell me it’s an option not to carry that shame. That, I might need to hear. But don’t tell me I ‘shouldn’t’ or ‘mustn’t’ feel it, as that would be a bit, well…shaming.”

A reminder of a favourite piece
Never underestimate the Butterfly effect
Systems change is a process
The flaps of their wings can travel over mountains
Invisible threads of connection bind us
One small touch of a hand
What’s so wonderful about “the butterfly effect”
The term was coined in the 1960s by a meteorologist, Edward Lorenz to describe the unpredictable impact in weather in one part of the world, by a change in behaviour in another part. He noted that, “A butterfly’s flap could cause a tornado or, for all we know, prevent one”
This phrase has become associated with the idea that one tiny change in part of the world can create a huge change in another.
Kindness is contagious. Witnessing human goodness is known as “moral elevation”. Research has shown that it raises our feelings of optimism and makes us want to act more altruistically towards others.
It’s easy to watch the news and feel depressed right now. Or feel hopeless about our ability to make a change. But the butterfly effect suggests that if you focus on the tiny things that are within your power – being kind to other people – can create a ripple effect and make a difference.
Monarch butterflies migrate by forming the shape of one huge butterfly. This helps them survive their flight. What if, like butterflies, we come together with acts of kindness to form a body of beings instead of focusing on our own individual needs?
This beautiful video is one of cinematographer, Louie Schwartzberg’s (@louiefilms) who is known for his @GratitudeReveal project.
Thank you to the survivor community for your support this year. Please take a moment to read our ‘Year in Review.’ We couldn’t do this work without this support. Thank you 🌸 #CSA
Thank you 🙏🏼
Another wonderfully written piece, which exactly sums up the mixed feelings arising at Christmas time for survivors of #csa .
“This is not a blog to debate whether or not survivors of #CSA within the family should cut off contact with their families. It’s a post to acknowledge that neither decision is easy. Both come with challenges - mainly a huge amount of sadness or grief.

It was, they finally spoke to my isva about it, told her it was best if I spoke to a therapist instead. I'd just spent a year in therapy which gave me the confidence to report it. All I hoped was to give police a name and tell them what he'd done, it made me feel silenced again.

Least trauma-informed thing a professional has said to a survivor?
‘God forgives you for your sins’. A Catholic nun and professional counsellor to a man multiply-raped as a child by a Catholic priest.
Counsellor engaged by Diocese of Dromore, Newry, N. Ireland.
If you are a survivor of CSA, what is the least trauma-informed thing a professional has said to you?
A therapist once told me “there’s no point in looking back, you’re an adult now - not a child.” (I just told her I wanted to talk about my childhood)

Wow… why do these people enter professions like these?

That the police were cancelling a VRI for me to give evidence because 'it would be too traumatic for me.' This was by email a couple of days before the interview was due to take place. When I emailed back to discuss, I received an out of office email -back in 14 days!

I’m currently writing workshops for #midwives and #healthvisitors. The aim is to increase understanding of how #CSA can shape pregnancy and early parenting experiences, supporting greater awareness and empathetic practice. They will take place in Jan as part of a wider programme

Rapists CHOOSE to rape.
It's not because they were sexually abused as children - the reality is that most victims and survivors of child sexual abuse NEVER rape or sexually abuse other people.
