I am little obsessed by our flock of chickens As I've got older, I take more and more pleasure at being trusted by these birds whose core instinct is to believe that anything or anyone who isn't part of the flock, is trying to hurt them. I believe I'm a core part of their flock

thought it was about time I properly introduced to the six young hens who are staying with us. All if them were hatched and raised by Winter earlier this year. Don't they look wonderful? Thank you to everyone who provided name suggestions

We've had some wonderful broody hens this year and this little Orpington was one father best. Tiny the Orpington started the year by raising a clutch of 8 Orpington chicks before hatching and raising these 9 Brahma chicks. Tiny is now in Norfolk with a wonderful family

Sunset in the orchard with the chickens. They're all moving away from the trees just off screen and moving towards their respective coops, getting ready to roost. Their sleep patterns are governed by circadian rythmns. They sleep when it's dark. They're awake when it's light

It's been a beautiful restful day for the flock. They've grazed, perched, hunted for bugs and (of course) dug holes. At the same time, I got up at 6am and now at 11pm, I'm thinking of taking a breath 🤣 #happyhens #freerangechickens #backyardpoultry #bufforpingtons

We've had an incredible breeding season with our Buff Orpingtons in 2026. We breed using the natural broody tendencies of the breed. They incubate, hatch and raise the chicks. Mum knows best.

There's so much competition for handfed wheat grains. Who do you think wins? The Brahmas who are the first multicoloured youngsters you see? The orange Orpingtons who jump in? The Marans, Patience the Copper Black or Puddle the White Splash?

Theres nothing like starting the day with a full body wiggle and shaking off that sleepy feeling (unless you're stood on your driveway and your neighbours are watching 😱🤣) #happyhens #freerangechickens #backyardpoultry #bufforpingtons #brahma

The wonderful Mr WG (local farmer) brought more kale plants from his fields. The Orpingtons wasted no time at all tucking in! I like to think that hanging vegetable plants straighfrom the garden (or a friendly farmer's field) provides dinner and a show for the chickens 🥰

I mentioned yesterday that time had been limited with the chooks. The reality is that it wasn't just yesterday, it has been all week. Today I made up for it with some lovely time just pottering with the team. I think they appreciated it too.

I've missed my team today. I had a mountain of paperwork to catch up on and then there was the dental appointment.... 😱 Anyway, I digress.... it all meant that the only time I git with the team was the early morning clean out routine and evening treats just before bedtime.

The Brahma youngsters love playing. I suppose that they need to use their wings at this stage to gain height and some distance as they won't be able to achieve such great heights once they're fully grown. Right now, they constantly amaze me with their flying skills.

The Brahma youngaters love hanging out on my new chairs. I say "my chairs" because I bought them, and I do sit on them but the chooks sit on them more. I bought 3 old folding chairs for £15 from a car boot sale. I keep an eye out for bargains like this that the chickens use

I planned on having some quiet time with the team. What I got instead was the young Brahma chicks making me laugh with their competitiveness to get as close to me as possible 🥰 #happyhens #freerangechickens #bufforpingtons #brahmachicks #backyardpoultry

I think I fell in love today. This little lady has just stolen my heart. Of course, I immediately headed next door to my neighbour to show her the video so that I could make sure she goes as part of the group to my friend at the other side of the hedge.

The Brahma chicks really are growing up to be absolute beauties 🥰 I'm so pleased that some of them will eventually be going to my neighbour at the other side of the hedge (who is LOVELY) so I get to see them throughout their lives 😊

Just Beanie the Cream Legbar, being Beanie. I was asked recently "Why do you make your hen fly onto your arm? You shouldn't make her do that" and I must admit that I did a double take at this. Beanie only does something because she wants to.

It's amazing how much fun a few raspberries can create. We're still getting a lot of raspberries from the fruit cage and every time I pick some, I take a small amount to the chickens.

The young Brahma chicks were raised separately by two different broody hens and they are now at an age where they are naturally integrating together. What's even better is that the younger Orpingtons are hanging out with them too, playing and sharing treats.

Apple the Orpington and her adopted Brahma brood who were originally incubated, hatched and raised by Tiny the Orpington , now appear to include Mulberry the Orpington's brood of Brahmas. Mulberry made her brood independent two day ago so has no interest in her youngsters now
