President Trump's welfare reforms could move at least 10 million people from welfare to work — even more than the historic 1996 reform achieved.
But some states are already trying to claw the wins back!

13,500 payments headed to deceased individuals, caught before a dollar left. Treasury's new verification process stopped $175 million in fiscal year 2026 — its first year running. This is what moving beyond pay and chase looks like. 🔗 home.treasury.gov/news/press…
Medicaid made at least $37 billion in improper payments in 2025 — and the true rate may be 20% to 25% of all payments. States must suspend payments to providers facing credible fraud allegations. Most don't. New research by @LieselCrocker. 🧵 + LINK. thefga.org/research/states-s…

.@USDA has a responsibility to ensure that retailers accepting food stamps are actually in the business of selling food.
I wrote to Governor Evers reminding him that we should all want authorized retailers to stock more healthful options, regardless of zip code or customer base.
And get this, the estimated cost to comply for small retailers is about $407. For anyone taking a penny of a $96 billion government program, an investment equal to $1.11 per day is hardly unreasonable.

Eight states. Zero fraud referrals. Zero overpayments recovered in Medicaid managed care. How is that possible across states serving millions of Medicaid beneficiaries?
Arizona, California, Iowa, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Wisconsin now have 30 days to double-check their numbers and make sure oversight is happening on the ground.
Either the reporting is broken, or the oversight is. We’re going to find out which.
893,000 food stamp households were collecting benefits for citizen children on behalf of illegal alien parents in fiscal year 2024. States built the loophole that makes it possible. New FGA research from @PolicyWithPaige. 🔗 thefga.org/research/rigged-b…
Here's how the food stamp loophole works: states can count just a slice of an illegal alien's income when sizing a household's benefit. A mixed-status household needs only half the income of an all-citizen household to collect the same amount. ⤵️ thefga.org/research/rigged-b…
Indiana now counts the full income and assets of illegal alien household members for food stamps. Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, North Carolina, Utah, and Wyoming have moved the same direction. Every other state can close this loophole. ⬇️ thefga.org/research/rigged-b…
New Jersey has company. Hawaii checked fewer than 1% of its Medicaid providers last year, and Michigan checked 10%. After Minnesota ran the checks, 60% of its providers failed.

Roughly 1 in every 5 Medicaid dollars is spent improperly, draining more than $1 trillion from the truly needy over the last decade. 20 states are suing to keep federal reviewers from the enrollment data. New FGA research from Jonathan Bain. 🧵 + LINK. thefga.org/research/data-den…
The Office of the Inspector General audited 14 states and found more than 450,000 Medicaid payments made on behalf of deceased individuals — nearly $250 million. Some had been dead more than 40 years. States never cross-checked rolls against death records they already had. 👀
At least 22 states have refused to hand USDA their food stamp eligibility data, and their improper payment rates run higher than states that opened their books. Lawmakers should mandate it by statute, not leave it to the sitting governor. ⬇️ thefga.org/research/data-den…
Fraudsters who pose as Medicaid providers shortchange the truly needy Americans who rely on the program and the taxpayers who fund it.
FGA's @PolicyWithPaige told @BillSpadea the fix already exists: states need to restore the simple checks they stopped running. 🎥👇

455 defendants charged over more than $6.5 billion in alleged health care fraud this year. The next cases aren't hidden: of the 89 hospice companies registered at 1 Los Angeles office plaza, 72 carry at least 3 fraud warning signs. 🔗 cbsnews.com/news/hospice-fra…

We asked all 50 states how often they make sure their Medicaid providers are legitimate. New Jersey admitted it hasn't checked one-third of its providers in five years, a check federal law requires.
