I agree with much of what @unclebobmartin has to say about engineering with agents -- they need management and a gauntlet of validation. But to avoid churn we need both validation AND models that encode the properties of interest.

Question: How do we engineer with commodity intelligence ("coding agents")? (and how do we get our humans off of code review duty?)
Answer: Models + alignment = Governed Engineering Environments, which compound.

My student Berk Çakar co-led a paper at @asiaccs2025 that provides a Systematization of Knowledge (SOK) on Regex Denial of Service. This paper includes a literature review as well as an "engineering review" of regex engine changes.

My student @AmPaschal01 recently presented his work "ZTDJava" at @ICSEconf.
He brought a new perspective to securing systems with third-party components, based on NIST's Zero-Trust Architecture paradigm.
Here's a blog post summarizing the work:

A team of #PurdueECE students has built a record-breaking machine that solves a RUBIK’S Cube faster than the blink of an eye 👁️!
Congrats to Brock Berta, Aden Hurd, Junpei Ota, & Matthew Patrohay on this remarkable achievement!
Come see the machine today (Fri) until 3 in MSEE!

My student Kelechi Kalu led a paper on software signing to USENIX Security'25. It was a great qualitative complement to my group's quantitative study at S&P'24. Kelechi's blog post writeup is available here: davisjam.medium.com/an-indus…
I share the following advice from Lamport with many students. Now I share it with you.

The US is a representative democracy. The legislative branch is constituted of representatives who (at least nominally) act in the interests of their constituents. It is the duty of US citizens to inform their representatives of their views.
Today I did so. Did you?
My lab published this paper in JSS. It's behind a paywall because I didn't have $3500, but here's a link anyone can use for 50 days!

And the winner of the award for "worst grad admissions experience for profs submitting letters" goes to ... CMU!
My student Dharun Anand presented at ASE'24, connecting the dots between some of his workshop papers. Great to connect the dots!
TL;DR: FAIL helps us find and collate news articles about software failures. How could it help us engineer better?

My student Nick Eliopoulos will present a paper at @wacv_official 2025, describing the non-linear relationship between latency and tokens for vision transformer optimization.
TL;DR: Prune one more token and you might get a big latency benefit.
