The U.S. prison system is billing people for their own incarceration.
In 48 states, jails and prisons charge incarcerated people pay-to-stay fees. But with average wages as low as 13 to 52 cents per hour, even basic costs are often out of reach.
The outcome? A self-reinforcing cycle of debt, prosecution, and prolonged incarceration.
We partnered with @CampaignZero to break down the outdated laws that make this possible.

What are the biggest public health hazards facing America’s biggest city?
We’re proud to share the 2024 Jurisdictional Risk Assessment (JRA), our recent collaboration with the @nycHealthy, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).
Our team worked closely with DOHMH to design and build an interactive report using @Esri's StoryMaps platform, which makes the data accessible, engaging, and actionable.
