Why do hotel room doors always seem determined to slam shut? It is mostly a fire safety thing. Hotel rooms are usually designed as separate fire compartments. The door is meant to close on its own so smoke and flames have a harder time spreading into the corridor. That is why the door closer feels so aggressive. It is not there for convenience. It is there to make sure someone does not leave the door sitting open during a fire. The heavy door helps with sound and security too, but the self closing part is mainly about containing fire and smoke. I used to think hotels just really hated quiet doors. Unpacked.

Why do receipts slowly turn blank? Most store receipts are printed on thermal paper. There is no ink involved. The printer heats specific parts of the paper, causing a chemical coating to darken and form the text. Over time, heat, sunlight, friction and even certain plastics can affect that coating. Eventually the printed areas fade until the receipt can become almost completely blank. So that important receipt sitting in your wallet is basically on a timer. Unpacked.

Why are tennis balls covered in fuzz? The fuzz is not just there for grip. As the ball moves through the air, the fuzzy surface creates more drag. That slows the ball down and makes its flight easier to control. Without the felt, a tennis ball would travel much faster and behave very differently after bouncing. The fuzz also affects how much spin players can put on the ball. A tiny layer of fabric is doing a surprising amount of work. Unpacked.
