Pete Carroll says winning championships was never actually the point “It isn’t about winning the championship. It’s not about that. As soon as you win it, it’s over with. It’s in your back pocket. You’ve already done that.” “That’s not the motivator. The motivator is to be the best you can possibly be. That’s ongoing. It never ends. I’m not a big goals guy.” “Goals, you achieve them. To me, I want ongoing, never-ending aspirations of being great at what you’re doing. There is no one game that is the only game. There is no one accomplishment that’s the only accomplishment.” “Can you come back again? Is that really who you are? Is that worth fighting for?” “Can you be true to yourself? Can you really be yourself under all circumstances? No matter what happens, when you get your ass whipped in the freaking Super Bowl, when you had two in a row and you’re two seconds from doing it again, can you come back after that moment and still be who you are?” “That was what the challenge was to me. As hard as that looked, as hard as it felt, and as hard as it was on all the people around me, I took it like this: ‘Okay, you knew this was going to happen sometime.’ ‘Are you going to be the real deal or not?’”

Steve Kerr explains that Phil Jackson taught him the way to coach talented players is to get out of their way “The way Phil coached Dennis really was the key to everything. It really informed me about what coaching was about.” “Phil demanded certain things of Dennis and then got out of his way. I saw how powerful that was.” “The idea of giving someone a vision and then letting them go. Then occasionally reining them back in. Show them the vision again. Letting them go again. That’s powerful. To me, that’s coaching. Because these players are artists, man. They’re so gifted at this level.” “If you’re going to call every play and try to orchestrate everything, you’re overthinking things. You’re not letting the players be who they really are.” “The way Phil handled Dennis was genius. Dennis was so excited to be part of the team, and he was so different. He connected with guys in strange ways. He wouldn’t say anything for a week.” “But there was just an energy from him where you knew, ‘That’s a good dude.’ You could tell he had a good soul. He was vulnerable in that way. He allowed you to see his soul and what he was about.” “But he didn’t communicate a whole lot. So you had to understand him. You had to get to know him a little bit.”

Nick Nurse gives a surprisingly blunt definition of good coaching: 1. Win games 2. Increase every player’s value in the marketplace “People ask me, ‘What’s your coaching philosophy?’ For me, I always try to say a couple things. One is: You’ve got to instill that you’re playing to win the game. That sounds really simple. But that is how we’re judged. That’s why they keep score.” “Right under that is: Can we increase each player’s value in the marketplace? The guys who make the All-Star team are always from winning teams. The guys who win end-of-the-year awards are always from winning teams. MVPs come from winning teams. Those things are closely related.” “I’m not afraid to talk to the players about that. How are we getting you to another place? To a better contract? A longer contract? From the 13th man to the ninth man? From the ninth man to the sixth man?” “What can we do? We spend a lot of time trying to get them better. We’ve got to develop them. We’ve got to work with them. We’re not afraid to tinker with their shot. We’re not afraid to put in the time.” “Our film sessions one-on-one are about winning basketball plays. That’s what makes a good coach.” “Can you substitute well? Can you call timeouts well? Can you draw plays? Can you get on them when they need it? Can you put your arm around them when they need that too?”

Rebounding analytics 🤝 scheme Not all 2 point FGs are created equally from a rebounding standpoint. Below is the offensive rebound rate for various shot types (Sloan Sports Conference): **Rebound % > Total Rebounds, especially when analyzing scheme. Inside 6 feet: 36.6% 6-10 feet: 28% 10-21.5 feet: 21.1% Three Pointers: 25.5% This, again, points to the fact that the mid range shot is the least efficient shot in basketball. With higher rebound rates, naturally you get higher FT % rates, which is one of the most efficient shots in the sport and impacts the game tremendously. More importantly this shows us SHOT QUALITY is a dual purpose advanced analytic. Teams who shoot quality shots, will naturally rebound at a higher %. Reverse engineering this process, you can gather information towards answering your ‘rebounding vs getting back’ philosophy question (@aaronfearne14 is amazing with this). I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer here, except that working inside/out and collapsing help defenders is clearly the superior way to play, whether in transition or in half court.

JJ Redick's offseason training was insanely rigorous and detailed: “If you want to have a full bucket of water, that’s the goal in life. You want a full bucket. But all you can do is add one drop at a time, so add as many drops as you can." "Every time you get in a cold tub. Every time you lift weights. Every time you have an hour-long shooting workout. Every time I did my pregame shooting workout. Every time I did my post-shootaround shooting workout. It’s all drops in a bucket." "My offseasons were harder than the season. That’s a fact. That’s a big reason I retired, because I couldn’t do another offseason." "My offseasons were six days a week, with two or three workouts a day. Saturdays were off. Every Sunday during the offseason, for the last 13 years of my career, I made exactly 342 shots." "Seven spots on the floor. Twenty spot-up twos. Twenty spot-up threes. Three-dribble pull-ups going right. Three-dribble pull-ups going left. Plus 20 free throws. That’s 342." "I started cold tubbing, and they wanted me to stay in for 12 minutes. Then I started thinking, ‘If I start my timer a little too early, I’m not going to get the full 12 minutes. I don’t want to cheat myself.’ So I started cold tubbing for 12 minutes and 25 seconds, just to give myself some wiggle room. "Everything in my routine was structured. On a normal game day, I knew exactly what I was going to eat for breakfast. I knew exactly when I was going to get to the gym. I knew exactly how many minutes I was going to spend in the hot tub before I got on the training table. "Then I got my activation work in the weight room. Then I did my pre-shootaround shooting. Then my post-shootaround shooting. Then my cold tub. I knew exactly what I was going to eat for lunch. "I knew exactly when I was going to nap. I had my naps timed out." "By the end of my career, if I said, ‘I need to fall asleep at 1:05 and wake up at 3:30,’ I could do it like that." "Especially once my kids were born, I didn’t take vacations. I would build three- or four-day breaks into the offseason just to give myself some clarity and relieve some of that pressure." "But my offseasons started the next Monday. If the season ended Saturday, I was in the gym Monday." "I loved the process. I loved everything that went into it.”

Vanderbilt Head Football Coach Clark Lea (@Coach_Lea) epitomizes the meaning of ownership. I love this clip because it's a masterclass in refusing to play the victim, escaping the echo chamber that imprisons so many people, and understanding that the internal agreement you make to chase excellence comes with immense pain and a hard truth: Nobody is coming to save you. 🔥 We are not victims in this process. The joy we experience is often equal and opposite to the pain we endure. Growth isn't found by avoiding adversity, it's found by carrying it with pride. The struggle you're facing today may be the very thing preparing you for the opportunities you're praying for tomorrow. 🧭 You don't control every circumstance, but you do control your response. This is the ground you stand on. This is where you're supposed to be. There are no mistakes. Every challenge, setback, and obstacle has the potential to drive you forward if you're willing to accept it as part of your journey rather than evidence that you've been treated unfairly. 🪞 Ownership requires honesty. Be proud of where you are, but be honest about where you've fallen short. The objective is never to wait for someone else to rescue you. The objective is always to perform better. To improve. To adapt. To grow. Excellence begins the moment you stop asking who will save you and start asking how you can become better. The moment you stop seeing your circumstances as something happening to you and start seeing them as something shaping you, adversity transforms from a burden into a blueprint. @VandyFootball is leaning into this idea for the 2026 season. #AnchorDown

Michael B. Jordan’s advice for anyone feeling stuck in life “When you’re feeling the most trapped and down and nothing can go right, those are the moments that define you. People quit right before they get what they’ve always wanted” “Having the name Michael Jordan, knowing there was another Michael Jordan who was the best ever got me teased and picked on. For a moment, it made me not want to play sports but then I was like nah, I’m going to compete. It gave me a healthy chip” “For the people who are listening who feel like they can’t change their circumstances, just hold on. Just endure. Look at things differently. Challenge yourself to see the glass half full” “Find something that resonates with you, find your intuition within that thing and be obsessed about it”

We are all just renting our jobs, roles, and titles. "I have been here for 15 years as the head coach...this position has been on loan and it wasn't mine to keep...It's time for me to give it back, but to give it back to gain what I can't lose." -- Tony Bennett Titles eventually get handed back. Just make sure you don't completely sacrifice what matters most trying to hold onto something that was never yours to permanently keep. Jobs are finite. Values are infinite. 📹: University of Virginia
