Beyond that, that doc exists! It’s not even obscure! It was a major HBO/Alex Gibney doc!

you see a contrarian take on You Can See Everything from a blue check and 80% of the time you read their bio and it turns out they work in tech. really illuminating.

is “the art of documentary filmmaking” not kind of sort of actively being bastardized by netflix, paramount, disney, and whoever else pretty much every single day with whatever True Crime Doc of the Day they release

I cannot articulate why it feels fascist to destroy the art of documentary filmmaking. Another institution that kinda wasn’t a problem. Partially think it should’ve been a reality show??

yes. those are all way worse than nathan fielder getting a lil cinema verite with it. like not all documentaries are investigative. that's the art of documentary filmmaking
Admittedly, haven’t had a chance to see YCSE yet. But, Nathan’s work has often been about drawing attention to and playing with the tension of subjective art vs objective truth that exists in ALL documentaries.

hot new tv takes:
Finished Below, solid but slight. Solid performances, doesn’t become more than the sum of its parts, but I had fun with it.
Crystal Lake pilot, on the other hand…
lmao
I loved “You Can See Everything.” But it left a sour taste: why would it be unethical for Holmes and Evans to get paid??
This is not a straight documentary. Fielder is shaping a performance amongst the 3 of them. So the conventional journalistic prohibition on paying sources doesn’t clearly apply. Framing A24’s financial interest as the neutral business of making a movie, while Evans’s as a moral failing feels flawed.
And then the part that gets sour is turning that negotiation into material. Which is quintessential Nathan Fielder, but AGAIN makes any appeal to conventional documentary ethics even less convincing.
Sounds like this is best case scenario. Soderbergh is a perfect fit, and Reeves isn’t off the movie, he’ll be coming back for post.
Steven Soderbergh is coming on to help finish principal photography the final weeks of DC Studios’ and Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman Part II.’
The news comes after production was paused on the film so that Reeves could attend to a family matter.

Wonder if Gunn has plans to bring them into live action too because otherwise it’s kinda hilarious to cast for the height difference in an animated project.
