One last complaint before I close: we finally got a 1.0 skin and I’m still waiting on Daffodil’s. Where is my city hangout skin? I want it >:(
.
Final score: 8/10
.
One of my favorite patches so far for the combination of the dark story, the park, the activities, and the rewards. Not perfect, but it tried something different and stuck the landing
I still haven’t fully explored the new zone, but the theme park (Pukaland / Funland) is already one of my favorite areas in the whole game. It feels like Knott’s Berry Farm mixed with Disney—cowboy stretches, themed zones, rides, and a bunch of mini-games. A lot of people call it “empty” or “boring,” but once you finish the main story NTE turns into an endless mini-game playground. You can just earn money and relax instead of being locked into serious mode all the time. It’s optional content that still rewards you, and I think that’s a good thing.
I didn’t pull Blackbird. I’m saving for a healer, so I have no strong opinion on her kit beyond the clips I’ve seen. I’ll probably skip the next banner too for the same reason. Across the whole update story, park, activities, generous rewards, the new tycoon layer, and the Porsche collab rerun it was a strong package. They even handed out free five-star redeems. NTE keeps being generous.
Blackbird’s personal story is the sad core. Hearing how she ended up at the Witch’s House, then watching her start to feel like she belongs in this older time period, made me sick in the way good writing should. The commission is framed as an escort job, but I barely did anything. It’s her show. There are only three real fightsthe early anomaly boss, the temple group, and the final one. Most of the runtime is dialogue and understanding why the town is the way it is The message lands clear: hurting innocent people is never the answer, and Blackbird keeps trying to help anyway. I ended up proud of her for choosing the right thing even as more of her past gets revealed
The biggest twist is the dual soul. There are two of them Blackbird and the other girl (Merula / Marula from St. Arbor) sharing one body and one mind. Two halves of the same soul that have been apart for a long time. The build-up to that revelation is clean, and the ending feels sweet and earned without being cheap. It’s not the loudest climax in the game, but it fits.
Once we reach the village the daily life stuff is everywhere. A lot of it is unvoiced text you have to click through, and I focused more on the main thread than every side dialogue, so some of that is on me. Still, the people feel alive. They’re going about their routines, arguing, praying, living. What really hits is the atmosphere. It’s basically a witch-trial timeline where anyone can get accused of anything, the innocent get dragged into it, and the whole town starts judging people who never hurt a soul and stayed faithful to their God. Game of Thrones meets The Crucible energy. The cult-like beliefs and the way fear spreads made me genuinely uncomfortable exactly the point. Watching good people get hurt is not okay, and they executed that discomfort perfectly. The village isn’t quite WuWa level of density yet, but it’s close enough that I respect the attempt. This thriller direction feels different from previous patches and I like that they’re willing to try it.
It starts the usual way. Blackbird hits me with a commission from the Witch’s House, so I was already bracing for another babysit-tour escort job. I’m not the biggest fan of those, but the second half flips the script hard. We drop into the Anomaly Realms again, get a short early boss, and once I realized there was a second anomaly waiting, the transition felt weird at first. I still accepted it.
Inside the second anomaly Blackbird starts hearing cries for help coming from the trees. We follow them and end up sliding backwards in time, before everything else in the timeline has even happened. That’s where we meet the strange red headed woman who becomes our guide through the whole thing. Her voice acting is spot-on for the periodaccent, cadence, even the slightly alien words she uses. The detail they put into the audio is the kind of stuff I love in this game.
NTE 1.4 “For Whom, The Verses Mourn" / Blackbird Story Review
.
I recently played the 1.4 main story live and I’ll say it straight: this is one of the most promising stories I’ve played in NTE so far, and one of the most annoying ones in the best possible way.
