While I agree that Twitter was required for these historic examples I reject the implication that there cannot be a solution that's different than Twitter for the future cases that may be similar to these historic incidents. – at Seattle, WA

Without Twitter, Ahmaud Arbery’s killers would’ve never been arrested. George Floyd’s death, even with the video, likely wouldn’t have sparked national outrage. Without twitter, we’re at the mercy of news outlets for reporting & you see how they publish police reports as fact.

Mastadon may or may not be the replacement. Activity pub protocol is an interesting candidate. I wonder what @Jack thinks that protocol lacks that an ideal Twitter protocol may have. Is sustaining the biz model required? Could Twitter be just as valuable as a client software?
