Just a reminder to people who are struggling with their weight that weight loss is *possible* at any age. I went from 127 kg in 2012 to 69 kg in 2022 and am currently hovering around 65 kg. It took me 40 years to find a solution, I obviously found one that works. At least for me.

An alligator kills someone and this bothers people. Yet, the very same person killing a fish doesn't seem to bother very many. The difference is that the alligator *must* kill in order to eat and survive. The man does not. Who is morally right here? youtu.be/_o7GKaM5IJU?t=712

Shawn Baker has discovered that artificial intelligence can perform a marvelous service for a man already certain of his conclusions: it can make selective evidence sound like settled science. His latest pronouncement is that vegans break more bones, and that a large British study proves the dangers of avoiding meat. The study is real. The numbers are largely correct. And that is what makes the deception by omission so effective. For the study also found differences in body weight, calcium intake, and protein intake—factors that help explain the fracture risk. But nuance is a dreadful inconvenience when one is selling a dietary ideology. Artificial intelligence can summarize a scientific paper in seconds. Unfortunately, it cannot compel its operator to understand the difference between association and causation. The problem isn't artificial intelligence. It's the rather old-fashioned human habit of deciding upon the verdict before examining the evidence.
Vegans Break Bones a Lot More Often — And a Huge Study Proves It A big group of scientists followed tens of thousands of people in Britain for years and counted every broken bone. The people who ate only plants broke far more bones than the people who ate meat. The difference was especially huge for hip fractures. Vegans were more than twice as likely to snap a hip as meat-eaters. That is not a small gap. That is the kind of gap that puts older people in wheelchairs and nursing homes. The study is called EPIC-Oxford. It tracked meat-eaters, fish-eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. After the researchers adjusted for age, smoking, exercise, and even body weight, the vegan group still came out on top for fractures. Their total fracture risk was about 43 percent higher. Their risk of breaking a leg was roughly double. Hip fractures were the worst. Vegans had more than twice the chance of breaking a hip compared with people who ate meat. That works out to about 15 extra hip fractures for every 1,000 vegans over ten years. Why does this happen? Vegans in the study ate less calcium and less protein on average than meat-eaters. Both nutrients help build and keep strong bones. Many vegans also weighed less, and thinner bones break more easily. Some of the risk stayed even after the scientists tried to account for calcium and protein intake. The numbers did not disappear. Long-term vegan diets, especially without careful supplements, leave bones weaker. Doctors already know that broken hips are dangerous for older adults. Many people never walk the same way again. Some die within a year. The EPIC-Oxford numbers show that choosing a strict vegan diet raises that risk in a measurable way. The people who ate meat, fish, or even dairy and eggs had lower fracture rates. The gap was clear and it survived the usual excuses. The message is simple. A diet that cuts out all animal foods can cost you bone strength. The largest long-term data we have shows vegans break more bones, especially the ones that matter most in old age. That is not theory. That is what the numbers say.

The meat industry tries very hard to keep cameras out of factory farms and slaughterhouses -- and a new undercover video shows why. Some day, our descendants will wonder about our collective blind spot to animal cruelty. A gift link to my column: nytimes.com/2026/10/17/opini…

He literally says "we are having a global measles outbreak because people went unvaccinated" as if he isn't entirely responsible for the anti-vax movement. Can't make this up.

We all know that Trump never lies, that he is honesty incarnate, don't we? Here is another thing he said very clearly. Pure honesty, surely. youtube.com/watch?v=QrCUKXrS…
When asked who gave the order for @Starlink / Starshield to go down in Ukraine, Trump says very clearly “It wasn’t us”. In my opinion there are two options, as I’m sure @ElonMusk is telling the truth: 1. @ElbridgeColby @USWPColby or @PeteHegseth @SecWar did this without authorization, and similar things have happened before, or 2. Technical fault nobody wants to admit to. Starshield in Kyiv protects AMERICAN diplomats and personnel as well as Ukrainians and @SenateGOP are demanding answers. I very much hope Hegseth will be fired after the midterms. he has dragged @DeptofWar into a quagmire by firing Delta generals and every warfighter who told him how to run Iran. He’ll cost Trump the House next month. cc @SusieWiles @ChrisLaCivita

Hunting is something I have never understood, even as a child when I was still eating animal (products). It strikes me as intentionally cruel and barbaric. I can understand trampling through nature, but why do other creatures need to be murdered while doing so?
It’s like Silent Spring again, but this time the mass poisoning agent isn’t the pesticide industry, it’s just hunters and for some reason we have a harder time standing up to them.

A meal is meal if you declare it one. The only requirement is that it is edible. Everything else is adornment. These↓ are all meals. You do not need "quick and easy recipes" that takes oodles of time, equipment and clean-up.

Spot on Biomass.Anthony Chaffee claiming Brussels sprouts carry 136 carcinogens is the ultimate tragedy dressed up as a comedy. He exploits basic plant chemistry to terrify people away from healthy vegetables, solely to lock them inside a rigid dietary elimination box. 1/2

In view of the current regime in the US, the new White House press secretary and the 2026 mid-terms, Americans might want to watch Babylon 5, a television series that made computer history starting in 1994, especially episode 10 of season 3 "Severed Dreams". Vote. It's important.

Great link. Worth watching. The narrative heard in the West is strangely quiet about reality. What came first: Israel or Hamas, and what is life in the Gaza concentration camp like?

Choose data over drama. Wise words. Data inform, dramas entertain. There is a big difference between these two. It is fantastic if and when they coincide, but data are important, dramas are not.
Replying to @SomerwilTara
4/4 True intellectual maturity requires considering different geographical perspectives to add layers of knowledge. By looking at other points of view, we find a common denominator and build wisdom, rather than fighting endless tribe wars. Choose data over drama!
