“I think that Darwin’s ideas undo many of the biggest problems in philosophy. So many philosophers keep hammering away trying to find the essence of this or that when Darwin has shown us that nothing of any interest has an essence. It’s gradualism all the way.”

NOLBERTO SOLANO on his first proper drinking session with Newcastle teammates Steve Howey and Duncan Ferguson:
“They called themselves ‘The Heavyweights’. They said, ‘Hey, little Peruvian, want to come for a pint?’ Of course, why not? I’m sociable.
“In Peru, the tradition is that you get a bottle of beer and share it with everyone in little glasses. Here, we went to the Pitcher and Piano. We were only there for about 45 minutes and it was bang, bang, bang with the pints.
“We went to the next bar, then the next. At one point they bought some whisky and I was saying, ‘No, no, no, no, no mixing. Only beer.’
“I was mullered. We came out of the bar, I didn’t know where I was, it was dark and my watch said four o’clock. I rang my wife to apologise and said, ‘I’m so sorry, I didn’t realise it was so late.’
“She said, ‘What are you talking about?’
“I thought it was four in the morning. It was four in the afternoon.”
Quite the introduction to English football.

This is the best Christopher Walken impression you’ll ever see in your life.
It’s not just the voice. It’s the utter absurdity.

Today is Battle of Britain Day. 145 Polish fighter pilots flew for the @RoyalAirForce in the #BattleOfBritain. No 303 Polish Fighter Squadron entered the Battle of Britain, credited with 126 kills, and was rated the highest-scoring fighter squadron of the battle.
Winston Churchill said: "Never was so much owed by so many to so few".
It is worth recalling the Polish contribution to the UK war effort in WW2.

Listen up, folks. Listen to what Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has to say about what happens if Russia attacks Poland and Poland’s capability to respond, even without U.S. support. 🇵🇱 vs 🇷🇺

This may be one of the eeriest - and frankly, most terrifying - 9/11 reconstructions I’ve seen.
The simulation recreates the final moments of American Airlines Flight 11 from the cockpit, essentially showing what hijacker Mohamed Atta would have seen as the North Tower rapidly filled the windshield.
But the audio you’re hearing is real.
Flight attendant Betty Ong, aboard Flight 11, was calmly reporting what was happening inside the hijacked aircraft - crew members stabbed, mace in the cabin, the cockpit inaccessible, and the realization: “I think we’re getting hijacked.”
American Airlines operations specialist Nydia Gonzalez was monitoring Ong’s call and relaying her reports to the airline’s operations center as Flight 11 raced toward New York.
At 8:46 a.m., the aircraft struck the North Tower.
Watching a reconstruction of what the hijacker would have seen while simultaneously hearing the actual voices of the people trapped aboard that aircraft is deeply unsettling.

Well said Andrew Marr. Balanced, fair-minded and completely correct.
