For the 13th consecutive year, Texas' Governor Greg Abbott has declared October to be "Careers in Construction Month" at the request of the Texas Association of Builders. We are pleased to share the signed proclamation here:
STATE OF TEXAS
OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR
Texas is proud to lead the nation with a robust economy and excellent business climate, and that economy is complemented by a construction industry that upholds an exceptional standard of quality. The contributions of construction workers have laid the literal foundation for the Texas that we know and cherish today. In a state characterized by economic prosperity with a strong emphasis on quality of life, the construction sector remains essential to sustaining the demands of continued growth.
The Lone Star State's construction workforce remains steadfast in meeting this challenge. As our population and economy continue to expand at an unprecedented rate, so does the need for skilled professionals in the industry. Our state stands ready to meet the demand by preparing for the necessary workers who will be required to support this ongoing development in the coming years.
Civic groups and industry professionals have admirably prepared for this demand by standardizing training and providing the next generation of construction workers with the necessary tools to thrive in this industry. With an eye to the future, these groups host job fairs, panel discussions, and community events to develop aspiring construction workers.
Each year, the month of October is set aside to increase public awareness and appreciation of the construction industry. During this month, employers, trade associations, and schools promote the industry's many career opportunities. By retaining and growing the number of skilled construction workers, we will ensure an even brighter future for the Lone Star State.
At this time, I encourage all Texans to learn about our construction industry, to appreciate the work that these dedicated professionals do, and to explore the numerous opportunities that this important sector offers. Together, we can and will build a bigger, better Texas.
Therefore, I, Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim October 2026 to be Careers in Construction Month in Texas and urge all Texans to observe the occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature this the 24th day of August, 2026.
Greg Abbott
Governor of Texas
Today, the Texas Jobs Council briefed Gov. Abbott on recommendations to strengthen career training, give students earlier exposure to skilled trades and align workforce programs with employers’ needs ahead of the 2027 legislative session.
TAB CEO Scott Norman serves on the council alongside leaders representing manufacturing, oil and gas, the chemical industry, business and organized labor, bringing residential construction’s workforce needs to the table.

Yesterday, JD Hale testified on behalf of the Texas Association of Builders before two Texas House committees to address key issues facing our state's housing sector.
Thank you Chairman Morgan Meyer (House Ways & Means Committee) and Chairman Drew Darby (House Energy Resources Committee) for the opportunity to participate in these hearings and discuss property taxes, local governments recent increases in fees and energy codes. Each of these issues affect our members, their clients and ultimately housing affordability. We appreciate your leadership and willingness to have an open dialogue on housing in Texas.
Today, the Senate Committee on Local Government held its first interim hearing to discuss property tax reform. TAB's VP of Government Affairs J.D. Hale was invited to testify about how property taxes affect housing affordability. Property tax reform has consistently been a legislative priority for TAB, and we appreciate Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Chairman Paul Bettencourt for continuing to make it a priority.
