for @TexasObserver, i reviewed Exhibit G, Fady Joudah’s phenomenal new collection of poems, essays, and photographs, which denounces a culture industry that seeks to absolve itself. texasobserver.org/after-geno…

Can confirm, @Sarah4Texas told me she intends to send subpoenas to individuals and groups associated with the fraudulent transgender mailers
New: A Republican district attorney in West Texas has opened a criminal investigation into pamphlets mailed to homes across Texas purporting to come from a transgender rights organization. bit.ly/4kb9Y1d

"Steven Monacelli of the Texas Observer has proven that this organization is a fake one, created in September in Wyoming, conducting its disinformation campaign through anonymity via a registered agent service."
Last night, TX House LGBTQ Caucus Chair @jessicafortexas sent a letter to every member of the Texas House about recent 'false flag' texts and mailings sent to millions of Texas voters by the "Texas Transgender Student Union", a fake organization peddling disinformation from WY.

It's almost hard to keep in mind, at this point, that Pulido's race is the Trump +18 one. The 3 South Texas seats that Republicans thought they had lined up to flip (28, 34, 35) are only Trump +10. texasobserver.org/poll-bobby… from @ajcorchado

Funding for drug rehabilitation programs has not kept pace with inflation in the past decade, and Texas hasn’t asked lawmakers for money to expand these programs, even as need grows and the agency says it is trying to offer programming to more prisoners. texasobserver.org/surge-pris…

Small update re: the Texas Transgender Student Union mailers. Snailworks, the company that provided mail tracking services for the mailers, denies sending them but will not disclose who hired them. The NRCC spent $4,677 on Snailworks on 8/27/26. TTSU was created days later.
The "Texas Transgender Student Union" that sent out mailers, which have become a major controversy among Republicans, is a real organization — but it was only formed in September in Wyoming as an LLC and is entirely separate from TENT, the organization marketed in the fliers.

These are from an anonymous LLC formed in Wyoming last month. Of course it’s an op!

Could 2026 be crazy enough for a long-awaited return to Texas populism? I wrote about the legacy of Jim Hightower and Clayton Tucker's campaign for Texas Agriculture Commissioner in the @TexasObserver

A bit of good news. @NataliaECG @VotebeatUS reports that the backlog of voter registrations in Texas appears to have been cleared. “We don’t know of any counties with pending applications,” the secretary of state’s office said Wednesday. texastribune.org/2026/10/14/…

Such a great author/subject pairing here from @TexasObserver—David Griscom, one of Texas populism's most thoughtful critics, appraising the modern Texas populist's virtues and limitations
New from @DavidGriscom: Populism is more than rhetoric or an us-versus-them style, it’s a movement that shaped Texas politics. And this longshot candidate is a throwback to a Democratic politics of another era. In 2026, it might be crazy enough to work. texasobserver.org/jim-highto…

When Jim Hightower came to power in the 80s, he radically changed the office of the Ag Commissioner from a sleepy office to one willing to take on progressive fights. It'd be good if we had politicians willing to take bold stands again today

TPUSA influencers were allegedly invited to cover the camp raid at Lochiel. Stunned but not surprised by this –– I have been writing about USBP for six years and have yet to successfully schedule a "ridealong" (and would never be invited to an active law enforcement operation)

"I’ve done larger events than this. I’ve never had this much pushback. I’ve never had this much security concerns,” Hasan Piker said. Both Republicans and Democrats told me they want the Campus Protection Act to be repealed because they believe it violates the First Amendment.
