Texas households speak a rich mix of languages. The large share of families speaking Spanish at home reflects the state’s cultural strength and connects people, businesses, and opportunities. Speaking multiple languages is more than cultural richness, it’s an economic advantage.

Back to school, Texas! K-12 enrollment grew from 5.2M to 5.7M (2014–2024). Nursery and preschool enrollment experienced a pandemic dip in 2021 before rebounding to record highs by 2023-2024. Growth is experienced differently across Texas, but enrollment statewide remains strong.

Texas' uninsured rate changed from 27.6% in 2006 to 19.1% in 2024. In 2024, nearly 1 in 5 Texans lacked health insurance coverage, giving Texas the highest uninsured rate in the nation. This map highlights local variation in coverage across the state.

Texas is aging, and the impact is showing in the state's dependency ratios. While the child dependency ratio declined from 34.2 in 2010 to 30.1 in 2025, the older-adult dependency ratio rose from 15.5 to 22.7, increasing the overall dependency burden on working-age Texans.

Most Texans 65+ live in households, but group quarters living such as nursing homes become more common with age. In 2024, Texans age 85+ were more likely to live in group quarters than those ages 65-74. The demand for senior housing and long-term care will continue to grow in TX.

August starts the back-to-school season! In 2023, Texas had more than 5,000 back-to-school related establishments, supporting over $2.7 billion in annual payroll. These businesses and their workers play a vital role as families and students prepare for the upcoming school year.

In 2024, 85.2% of Texans age 65 and older received Social Security income, making it the most widely used source of financial support in retirement. While job earnings and retirement income averages more per recipient, only about 40-50% of older Texans receive them.

In 2024, Texas ranked among the nation’s top agricultural exporters, with beef and veal leading all Texas commodity exports at $1.27M. The largest exporters of animal products were Iowa (the largest pork producer), Texas, California, and Nebraska (one of the top beef exporters).

Texas homeowners are increasingly facing higher housing costs. Between 2021 and 2024, the share of homeowners paying less than $2,500 per month declined, while the share paying $3,000 or more rose from 20.2% to 27.0%, even after adjusting for inflation.
