At the Alberta Legislature, a young counter-protester argued that Canada could still be fixed. Then an older independence supporter joined our conversation.
When the young man blamed older generations for Canada's problems, the gentleman challenged him on his ageism and walked him through more than a century of Western Canadian history.
From the creation of Alberta in 1905 to Louis Riel, Preston Manning's Reform Party, and decades of unsuccessful attempts at constitutional reform, he made a compelling case for why so many Albertans have lost faith in Ottawa.
The young man pushed back, but he also listened.

Canada belongs to Canadians.
Not to the government. Not to foreign governments. Not to the next announcement.
Between April 2022 and March 2025, Ottawa sent $41.7 billion in Canadian tax dollars outside the country. That’s roughly $38 million a day for three years.
That money could have built refineries, hospitals, schools, and tens of thousands of homes here.
Spending is not the same as results. A bigger budget does not automatically mean better services. And when the results fall short, someone should have to answer for it.
Public office is a responsibility, not a blank cheque.
Canadians deserve to see what was spent, why it was spent, and what it actually delivered.
