We've been exploring how clinical trial participants can control a powered wheelchair — with their minds.
Here's how we’re doing it 🧵

We are working to restore mobility that was lost due to disease or spinal cord injury by allowing participants to control robotic arms with their thoughts.
See how this is possible.

Life with ALS or a spinal cord injury often means navigating a gradual or sudden loss of independence.
Neuralink aims to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs—starting with device control and communication, and expanding toward vision and other applications.

🇬🇧 We’re excited to announce our first participant in the UK!
Paul, who is paralyzed due to motor neuron disease, received his Neuralink implant at @uclh earlier this month and was able to control a computer with his thoughts just hours after surgery.

P3, the first ventilated ALS participant enrolled in PRIME (@ALScyborg), gave an inspiring talk at the ALS Arizona Vendor Fair last week. Huge thanks to Taryn and @ALSAZ for bringing everyone together and for all the work they do to serve the ALS community.
These moments put everything into perspective 🫶🏼

I just uploaded a 525 page pdf of my entire chatgpt conversation history, asked Grok to pull all of the content relevant to my Consciousness Individuation Hypothesis, and asked it to familiarize itself with the theory so we could continue working on it. A minute later I was refining definitions with Grok's help! Absolutely incredible. Four questions later I got a pop-up saying I reached my 5 question limit for this 12-hour period. I'm too curious for only 10 questions a day. Do N1 chips come with lifetime SuperGrok Heavy accounts? Asking for a friend. 😎 Be good, do good. @xai @neuralink @elonmusk

I agree. It would be ideal if @Telepath_8 could travel and stay in his chair, like he does in his van or on buses or metros. Unfortunately airplane isles are so narrow that not even a manual wheelchair can fit down the aisle.

Flying with a quadriplegic and a power wheelchair is challenging. If @Telepath_8’s chair gets laid on its side it can destroy the wheelchair and we’d be screwed. They’re insanely expensive and he can’t just use another one, his is built and tailored for his body and needs.

It’s the only airline that meets the requirements for @telepath_8 to be able to fly with his power wheelchair to Miami. We have to have a direct flight on a plane that has cargo doors tall enough to load his wheelchair and keep it upright, to lesson the chance of damage.

How exactly are you going to help at this point when you have already ignored the Airline Passengers with Disabilities Bill of Rights and @telepath_8 is in enough pain that he has had to take pain meds and the flight was delayed so he is spending more time in the seat?

@telepath_8 respectfully declined @SpiritAirlines offer and asked them again just to get the plane full of people into the air. They ignored him again until he loudly stated “I DO NOT CONSENT” three times. And they still looked to me for confirmation as though he had no autonomy.

The transfer in and out of a @SpiritAirlines seat is always uncomfortable, time consuming and risky. It is easy to injure a quadriplegic in such a tight space. Moving @telepath_8 back onto the hard isle chair to place his seat cushion just wasn’t a possibility at that point.

@SpiritAirlines once again ignored @telepath_8’s request and spent another 15 minutes discussing the issue and finally agreed that it was legally ok for him to use his medical device during take off and landing and said that they would call for the accessibility staff to return.
P8•N1CK retweeted
The accessibility crew transferred @telepath_8 into his @SpiritAirlines seat without his cushion and left. He told the crew that at this point we were beyond being able to wait for a decision about his cushion and to just get the plane in the air to limit his time in the seat.

@Telepath_8 is one of the smartest most competent people I know. And that’s saying something, the talent at @neuralink is outstanding. Just because he has ALS does not mean that he doesn’t have the right to make his own decisions @SpiritAirlines

@SpiritAirlines informed me that they didn’t have any problem with @telepath_8 sitting on his medically necessary seat cushion during the flight, just not for take off and landing. How am I supposed to transfer a quadriplegic out of his seat to place his cushion by myself?
