The country should be asking why the officers killed on the A66 must compete for public attention with balloon releases and flare displays for those in the car that struck them. PC Tom Clough and PC Matthew Blades went to work and did not come home. Their families now live with an irreparable loss. Respect for the dead means honesty about the circumstances, not the manufacture of folk heroes from reckless behaviour. Britain cannot build safer communities if it permits a culture that reserves its loudest rituals for those who put everyone else at risk.

If your family member is either an habitual law breaker or associates with those who are, and is currently unconvicted by more luck than nature, do not attempt to blame police for trying to prevent them from bringing misery to decent people’s lives. The route to this tragedy sits with those now demanding answers and the deaths of two decent police officers is the consequence of that failure.
