JESUS PRAYED FOR THOSE WHO HAD NOT YET BELIEVED Before We Ever Knew His Name, We Were Already in His Prayer John 17:20–23 (NIV) Before the cross, before the empty tomb, before the gospel spread across nations and generations, Jesus Christ prayed for people who had not yet believed in Him. On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus lifted His eyes toward heaven and declared: “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message.” (John 17:20, NIV) These astonishing words reveal the immeasurable reach of Christ's love. His concern extended beyond the disciples gathered around Him to future believers who would hear their testimony. The Savior was approaching His darkest hour, yet His heart embraced generations still to come. 1. THE PRAYER BEFORE THE CROSS John 17 records what Christians commonly call Jesus' High Priestly Prayer. The Last Supper had taken place. Jesus had warned His disciples of coming persecution, promised the Holy Spirit, and spoken of His return to the Father. Judas had departed to betray Him. Arrest, suffering, and crucifixion were approaching. Yet Jesus devoted this sacred moment to prayer. He prayed for His own glorification through the completion of His Father's work, for the protection and sanctification of His disciples, and finally for those who would believe through their witness. His prayer reveals a profound truth: Christ's mission was never limited to one generation. 2. THE PEOPLE JESUS HAD NEVER MET Jesus specifically prayed for those who would believe through the apostles' message. This included future Christians across languages, cultures, nations, and centuries. The first disciples would carry the testimony of His death and resurrection into the world. Their witness, preserved in the New Testament, would become foundational to the Church. Romans 10:17 teaches that faith comes through hearing the message about Christ. Jesus anticipated that this message would reach people far beyond Jerusalem. Scripture does not say that He mentioned every future believer individually. It does reveal that He deliberately included future believers in His prayer. What extraordinary love: before they believed, Christ was already praying for those who would become His followers. 3. THE UNITY THAT REVEALS GOD Jesus' central request was remarkable: “That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.” (John 17:21, NIV) He was asking for something deeper than religious cooperation. He desired spiritual unity rooted in a shared relationship with God. The Father and Son possess perfect divine unity. Through Christ, believers are invited into fellowship with God and one another. This does not mean Christians become divine or lose their individual identities. It means their lives should increasingly reflect God's holiness, humility, grace, and love. Jesus connected this unity with the world's recognition that the Father had sent Him. Christian unity was intended to become a living testimony to the truth of the gospel. 4. THE HOLY TRINITY AND THE WORK OF GRACE John 17:20–23 directly emphasizes the relationship between the Father and Son. The surrounding farewell teachings also reveal the ministry of the Holy Spirit. In John 16:13, Jesus promised that the Spirit of truth would guide His disciples into truth. Together, these passages illuminate the Triune God's work in salvation. The Father sends the Son. The Son accomplishes redemption. The Holy Spirit guides believers into truth and empowers faithful witness. Unity cannot be manufactured through outward agreement alone. It grows as believers remain in Christ, submit to His Word, forgive one another, and walk in the Spirit. Grace brings people into God's family. Love teaches them how to live together. 5. AN OVERLOOKED TRUTH ABOUT THE KINGDOM Jesus did not pray merely that future generations would hear religious information. He prayed that believers would experience profound unity with God and one another. This reflects the Kingdom of Heaven, where people from every nation are gathered under the lordship of Christ. Revelation 7:9 portrays a multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language standing before God's throne. The prayer of John 17 points toward this glorious gathering. Yet unity never requires abandoning truth. Earlier, Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” (John 17:17, NIV) True Christian unity embraces both love and faithfulness to God's revealed Word. 6. LIVING AS ANSWERS TO HIS PRAYER Consider the early Church. Acts 2:42 describes believers devoted to apostolic teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer. Their shared faith became visible through generosity, worship, and practical care. Modern Christians are called to demonstrate the same devotion. Every act of forgiveness, every humble reconciliation, every faithful proclamation of Jesus, and every expression of sacrificial love can reflect the unity for which Christ prayed. We cannot create spiritual life through human effort. We can respond obediently to God's grace. The Church honors Christ not merely by speaking about His love, but by living in it. CONCLUSION: YOU WERE INCLUDED IN HIS PRAYER Jesus approached Calvary knowing the suffering ahead. Yet His prayer reached beyond the immediate crisis toward the future of His redeemed people. John 17:20 reminds believers that their place in God's unfolding plan did not begin with their own initiative. Christ's love preceded their response of faith. And the Savior who prayed for future believers continues His intercession for His people (Hebrews 7:25). His desire remains that we believe His message, walk in truth, love one another, and reveal His glory to the world. Before we ever lifted our voices to Him, Jesus had already lifted His voice for those who would believe. REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. How does knowing Jesus prayed for future believers deepen your confidence in His love? 2. Does your treatment of other Christians reflect the unity Jesus requested from His Father? 3. What practical act of forgiveness, humility, or love could help make Christ visible through your life today? CLOSING PRAYER Heavenly Father, thank You for the extraordinary love revealed in Your Son, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus, I am humbled that You prayed for those who would believe long after Your earthly ministry. Fill my heart with gratitude for Your saving grace. Holy Spirit, guide me into truth, remove pride and division from my heart, and teach me to love others with the love of Christ. Unite Your people in holiness, humility, faith, and obedience. May our lives reveal the glory of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, bringing many souls into Your everlasting Kingdom. In the precious and mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
