And all this time I was certain it said "Be sure to drink your Ovaltine" (If you get that reference, congratulations! You're old!)
A YouTuber claims they've finally solved Super Mario 64’s biggest mystery after nearly 30 years He says the blurry text “L is real 2401” actually says “Eternal Star. We hope so.”
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The YouTuber's analysis is an AI-assisted computational best-fit simulation on the low-res 32x32 plaque texture, not a definitive reading or official confirmation. A 1998 Nintendo letter called the text a meaningless developer joke. github.com/supermochi64/s… mynintendonews.com/2016/12/11/nin… techspot.com/news/114256-su…

Now we have to worry about AI models becoming Otaku. Lovely.
Researchers proved every LLM is secretly obsessed with Japan. And they finally figured out why. They published a paper investigating hidden cultural biases in large language models. they tested 31,000 questions across 24 different languages on models like gemini, chatgpt, claude, and llama. they stripped out all geographic hints and just asked the models to pick a place and answer. the finding was universal.. across a wide range of models and languages, there is a pervasive "obsession" with japanese culture. even when you prompt them in a language with zero ties to japan, they default to japanese norms, values, and aesthetics at a disproportionately high rate compared to its actual global demographic weight. the craziest part? they tracked down exactly when the ai develops this obsession.. and it is not from reading the raw internet. during pre-training, the models actually have a fairly balanced, global view of the world. the obsession gets injected during the safety phase. when tech companies fine-tune these models to be "helpful, harmless, and polite," the ai starts mapping those corporate safety guidelines directly onto japanese cultural concepts. in the pursuit of creating the perfect, inoffensive, compliant assistant, they warped how the models view the world. the quantization process (compressing models to run faster locally) actually amplifies this determinism. the smaller and faster your local model is, the more stereotypically it behaves, causing japanese cultural tropes to spike hard. we spend all this time worrying about existential ai safety, but the real alignment problem is that our most advanced reasoning engines are hyper-fixated on japanese internet culture. every model upgrade is reinforcing an invisible regional bias that dictates how they generate stories, facts, and code. the cultural commonsense of the internet is not universal.. it’s just localized to whatever the heaviest reddit and anime wiki users were obsessed with.

We NEED a game based on this concept. Or a comic. Or an animatic. Heck, I'd even settle for a fanfic.
In honor of the upcoming Halloween🎃...here are two oldies I made 3 years ago. So....who you gonna call? 👻❤️🩷💙🧡

To all who were also part of EFR back in the day: Google your handle & "Everfree Radio". See what Google AI (bah!) turns up. It's pretty funny and a total ego trip. "Prominent community figure", indeed. 😂 ...What? I can't be the only one who Googles their own name sometimes

You know, it's true when they say that you can never go home again. But, you can still visit occasionally and crash in your old bedroom. I've missed this.

Stopped at wawa this morning to get breakfast. No lie, the cashier asked me: "Would you like to put the banana in the bag?" Instinctively, my brain started screaming NOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Today I reconnected with another old friend from back in the day. Feels great. THE PROJECT isn't just about the old days. It's also about the people I knew back then, and the friendships we had; friendships I wish I'd maintained.

I realized this recently. Used to get down on myself when I felt the things I did got ignored while other people got noticed. I'm trying to remember now that I'm doing this for ME. It doesn't matter how many others see it. It's freeing in a way.
Even if no one else really cares about what you do, you should. Because the only person who truly knows you best, who will love what you do most, who will be the most excited when you create something new... Is you ✨ Staying motivated when you seem to be the only one who cares is hard, but don't let other people's lack of motivation for what you make dampen your passion.

Anyone remember the Simpsons ep w/ Frank Grimes? Had to fight tooth and nail for everything? That's how the past month has felt for me. Been hard finding time for THE PROJECT, which is low priority considering. But it is something i can look forward to, which helps. /)

Just got back from seeing Whalefall. Was expecting gross horror. Actually got a surprisingly poignant and inspiring film. Well, as much as a movie about being eaten by a whale can be, anyway.

Okay! Fine! I admit it! I didn't get rid of EVERYTHING.

Oh I did NOT just drive past the fricking ECTO-1 on my way back from the grocery store. 😲 Couldn't take a pic while driving so you'll all just have to trust me.

Revisiting old online haunts and discovering them to still be quite active feels both strange and wonderful. It's unexpected, but it's also nice to see that the flame still burns. /)

This is how the current X/Bluesky situation feels right now.

DAMMIT. Bluesky was supposed to be the ethical, human-based alternative to X. So much for that i guess. So what happens when every social media platform embraces AI? It's not possible to boycott EVERYTHING. I'm so tired right now.
Vibe-coding, but make it social. Starting today you can use Attie to make sites: Games, quizzes, guestbooks, your top 8, or whatever you dream up. Go try it!

Thirteen years ago I actually gave an interview where I shared some words of wisdom about getting back up when you fall and continuing to run. Today, I'm finding myself needing to take my own advice. Thanks for the inspiration, past me.
