We built Erys because people need somewhere for their agents to live. OpenClaw proved something important: people want persistent AI agents that live in their messaging apps and actually do things. 🧵

Everyone's expecting a reborn Siri at WWDC today. Well, Apple already published a paper on it that disclosed way more details than what we expect from Apple. It's called "Ferret-UI", a multimodal vision-language model that understands icons, widgets, and text on iOS mobile screen, and reasons about their spatial relationships and functional meanings. Example questions you can ask Ferret-UI: - Provide a summary of this screenshot; - For the interactive element [bbox], provide a phrase that best describes its functionality; - Predict whether the UI element [bbox] is tappable. With strong screen understanding, it's not hard to add action output to the model and make it a full-fledged on-device assistant. The paper even talks about details of the dataset and iOS UI benchmark construction. Extraordinary openness from Apple! They are truly redefining their AI research branch. The paper was silently released with little PR fanfare in April. You still have enough time to warm up before WWDC: arxiv.org/abs/2404.05719

For all our LLM (and many ML) projects at Shopify we standardized on promptfoo.dev/ for writing evals. That has caused a lot of great progress speedups. Highly recommended if you are looking for good eval system. Fun realization: TDD is alive and well in the ML world!

AI is not some sort of natural phenomenon that will just emerge and become dangerous. *WE* design it and *WE* build it. I can imagine thousands of scenarios where a turbojet goes terribly wrong. Yet we managed to make turbojets insanely reliable before deploying them widely. The question is similar for AI: "do we think there exists at least one design of an AI system that is simultaneously safe/controllable, and can fulfill objectives in more intelligent ways than humans ?" If the answer is yes, we'll be fine. If the answer is no, we won't build it. Right now, we don't even have a hint of a design of a human-level intelligent system. So it's too early to worry about it. And it's way too early to regulate it to prevent "existential risk."

A new AI Application World has arrived Everyone can now make their own AI Application, even me! You know I’m not a programmer, even though I worked for years at a programming magazine back in the 1990s where I learned a few things (that really set the stage for me to become a strategist at Microsoft). In MyShell you can build your own AI Apps, with its developer product “Pro Config.” A state machine that leverages all sorts of cool AI projects–including ones you can imagine. Think of that as a new Roblox for the AI age, but you can build much more than just games. The app I built will talk with you about problems from the LeetCode developer site. Copy and paste a problem into my AI app and it’ll help you. Try it here: app.myshell.ai/bot/iMJzym/17… More in thread:
