Replying to @TechNYC
@TechNYC is exploding and only going to grow bigger. The valley companies such as @AnthropicAI and so. many others are taking on massive spaces. We saw this in 2003 when Google brought the engineers. The amount of talent pouring into NYC who are going to leave those companies and start the next great companies will be unprecedented combined with the compounding effects of the last 25 years. crainsnewyork.com/real-estat…

In today's @Searchlight_NY op-ed, @TechNYC's @juliepsamuels looks at a Council bill that would penalize companies $25,000 per “instance” for deploying AI models lacking third-party validation, even when the model’s developer is responsible for obtaining it. Read more:

🤝 Strong relationships are built before you need them. @juliepsamuels of @TechNYC shares why trust, goodwill, and empathy matter, especially when things get difficult. Sometimes the best way forward starts with understanding the person across the table.

Yes to this! The irony is that both policies - NYS data center + NYC AI in schools - are relatively short (1 yr) and incl ongoing engagement. But politicians + supporters position them as going much farther than they actually do (to be certain, *I* think they both go too far) 1/2
For both Mamdani’s k-8 AI ban and Hochul’s data center moratoriums think the issue I have is with the framing, intent and expectations behind “moratorium”. It implies - we the mighty regulating bodies will sit on this (& signal that we care so much now by doing so) and hold the evil techies off for a year until it’s someone else’s problem. What if instead we had a terms (and associated expectations) for public/private advisory boards with monthly meetings made available to NY citizens? You could argue it’s semantics, but I believe that communications and language are really powerful tools and we need more language for handshaking, building, collaborating vs shutting down and sticking our heads in the sand.

Read this this morning and I have to say @juliepsamuels @TechNYC has the right take on New York's new school AI moratorium. The city is banning student-facing generative AI from pre-K through 8th grade for the next school year. I get the impulse. Nobody wants their kid to be a lab rat for unvetted software. But a ban doesn't keep these tools away from kids. It just makes sure they meet them without a teacher anywhere nearby. We did something similar with social and kids fell into the algorithm anyway. And we tried this with TI-86 calculators when I was in HS. Give folks the tools and teach them how to use them — when they’re young and malleable. Teach them responsible use. This one is personal. My 10-year-old is a student in a NYC public school, and he's a big Replit fan - it sparks so much of his creativity. He can imagine something and see it come to life. He isn't using AI to get out of school work. He's using it to build things he couldn't build last year, and it makes him more curious, not less. Kids like him deserve guardrails and adults in the room. New York has the chance to set the standard for responsible AI in education, as Julie writes. I hope we take it - clear rules parents can actually read, and real teaching about the tools these kids will use for the rest of their lives.
“Our schools should be preparing students for the world that is already here.” In today’s @NYDailyNews, @TechNYC President & CEO @juliepsamuels makes the case that instead of banning AI through eighth grade and offering high schoolers only very limited access, NYC should help young people understand, question, and use it safely. nydailynews.com/2026/09/03/n…

For years, the advice was to move to San Francisco if you wanted a career in tech. That advice is now wrong. New York has become the most exciting place in the world to build. A few reasons why: 1. The AI labs are here. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and hundreds of others all run meaningful operations in NYC. You can now build a serious frontier-tech career here without giving up anything. 2. Every major industry lives here, and so does its AI counterpart. New York doesn't only have "tech," but finance, media, advertising, fashion, healthcare, real estate, law, and commerce too, with their applied-AI layer counterparts being built on top of each one. 3. The talent pool is unlike anywhere else. SF gives you engineers. New York gives you engineers, plus world-class designers, salespeople, bankers, marketers, operators, creatives, and media people, all at the top of their fields. Companies will need all of them. 4. People actually want to live here. New York is unlike any other city with its density of restaurants, art, nightlife, fashion, and media - and the people working across these sectors. If you're building something and you're more than just tech, I'd argue there's only one city for you right now.

As tech continues to grow across every sector, it only stands to reason that NYC would be home to the largest and most integrated tech ecosystem. Increasingly, every company is a tech company and our city’s challenge is navigate this transition to benefit all NYers. (1/2)
