I'm 40 years old. I've been lifting weights consistently since I was 20 years old. Here are 3 things I would tell my 20-year-old self when starting. 1. Progressive overload > novelty 2. Prioritize protein with each meal 3. Adequate sleep is the BEST recovery aid
108
Progressive overload matters more than the tool used. Whether you use machines, free weights, or body weight, your progress relies on adding reps or weight, or time. I have a bias for free weights but my bias for that isn't as important as your need to bias progressive overload.

Here are the #1 & #2 things you should apply for your warm-ups when lifting weights. #1 specificity is king. Warm up your squats by doing bodyweight squats and then lightly loaded squats. #2 make incremental weight jumps on your warm-ups as you approach your working weight.
106
Warming up with the empty barbell for a few sets is an adequate warm-up, but if you feel better doing 3-5 mins of directed mobility before grabbing the barbell, that's cool. Do what feels best for you. Experiment with both approaches. I know your time is limited. Be efficient.
