Tom Brady explains why he’d rather have a less talented teammate who is dependable every day than a gifted player who’s unpredictable ā€œWhat ended up being my biggest weakness became my biggest strength. There’s a physical, mental and emotional part of us that allow us all to be successful.ā€ ā€œWe oftentimes over-evaluate the physical. Emotionally, you bring a competitive stamina, energy, enthusiasm and optimism to the team every day.ā€ ā€œThere’s nothing worse than a teammate that one day he’s fucking great, and the next day, what happened to him? When you have that athlete or teammate that you know every day is going to show upā€¦ā€ ā€œHe’s going to be on time. He’s going to train hard. He’s going to be good in the locker room. He’s always going to be dependable. Those are the type of teammates you want.ā€ ā€œYou would take someone like that over the more skilled player that has more volatility because you know what you can count on.ā€ ā€œTo me, mentally and emotionally I was off the charts. Physically, I needed to catch up.ā€

Garrett Temple says the secret to lasting 16 years in the NBA is being low maintenance ā€œI think it goes back to what we talked about earlier. Just understanding your role. I think it’s more difficult for highly touted guys, or guys that are just very talented, that can do a lot of good things and don’t get that opportunity right away. I think they may not be able to be adaptable.ā€ ā€œThe talent level is immense. But the ability to be professional, and that’s general, but that means be on time, have a work ethic, be low maintenance. I think that’s the big thing now.ā€ ā€œBeing low maintenance, which means not having anybody have to worry about you, or asking for too many things, or you being a prima donna, or things of that nature.ā€ ā€œJust being somebody that’s under the radar. I call it the ā€˜What do you need, Coach?’ player. When you can be that guy, and then once you get on the court you produce, especially on the defensive end, offensively you can make shots, miss shots, but if you produce defensively and you cause no problems, you only bring positivity to the team, it’s hard for coaches and GMs to get rid of you. It’s very hard.ā€ ā€œThose are all things you can control. It’s simple, but it’s not easy. Because you get in your head. ā€˜I was this dude, but you go three games without playing. The dude in front of me not even playing well. What are you doing?ā€™ā€ ā€œThe ego is so big in professional sports. You have to have one to get to a certain level, but you literally have to be able to turn it on and off.ā€ ā€œAnd once your mindset is about winning, the team winning, you can focus on doing whatever the team needs you to do to win. That’s the biggest thing that allows people to stay in the league.ā€

It is and always has been very important to protect the team culture and standards. Without those, it becomes a bunch of individuals worried only about themselves.
Replying to @espn
The important part is Deion Sanders saying he made this mistake LAST YEAR. He admitted he let conduct detrimental to the team linger, watched it eventually ā€œimplode,ā€ and decided he would not repeat it. So after that 41-7 Northwestern loss, a few players are already gone. This is bigger than players laughing after a loss. Deion is basically saying one bad attitude can become a locker-room disease if the coach keeps tolerating it.

Throwing it all the way back to 1987, when Rick Pitino was at Providence breaking down his meticulous preparation for a matchup against Villanova. Five minutes of pure basketball knowledge—and absolutely worth the watch. This is Rick Pitino excellence on full display. #SJUBB

Shane Battier shares a must-listen on what it really means to be a champion, how to be a great teammate, and how to make an impact. "The sign says, 'Champions are made when no one is looking.' I sorta laugh at that sign because there is no better sign to sum up my career than that. I lived that literally." Here's why: "My last few years in the NBA, I was first or last, depending on how you look at it - in a stat called time per possession...I was the NBA's version of hot potato." Then he did the math: "I found out that 98% of the time I was on the court, I didn't touch the ball. Only 2% of the time I actually physically touched it." "Most people watch the player with the ball or guarding the ball. So literally, when I say 'champions are made when no one's watching' - no one is watching me for 98% of the time." "But yet I was an integral part of my team. I was an integral piece in my coach's sweat when I didn't play." How did he do it? "I always looked at ways to impact the game. Boxing out. Taking charges. Sexy plays like running back on defense. All of these made up my 98% of time spent away from the ball." 98% invisible, but 100% essential. You don't have to score to make an impact on the game. The best teammates own their role. They are willing to put the team first over individual glory. (šŸŽ„ The Nantucket Project)

Simple exercise to attack selfishness within your team: Challenge your team to finish this sentence: "You can tell someone is not interested in the team concept when ______." Make a list of their answers: 1. 2. 3. You've named the opponent: human nature. Now make a commitment to beat it.

Steph Curry says the first test of whether someone really wants to become great is if someone has to tell them to go to the gym ā€œI always tell kids now, nobody should have to tell you you should go to the gym, right? As a kid I was that type of kid, I was going to find a gym wherever.ā€ ā€œMy dad played in the league, so it’s not like the access wasn’t there, but he couldn’t be the one telling me it’s this time, ā€˜What we doing today?’ If I’m not the one pushing that, start there.ā€ ā€œIt always became just a joy of finding ways to get better. Every day I was just exploring, trying stuff. Never really satisfied with the level that I was shooting. Even if I had the greatest workout, I’m probably thinking about the couple of misses that I had. I was always curious about how can I get better the next session?ā€ ā€œJust exposing myself to different thought processes, being uncomfortable, getting in gyms with players better than me.ā€ ā€œIf you’re not getting anything out of it, there’s that internal voice that’s like, ā€˜I probably coasted today.’ Or, ā€˜No, I did something. I got something out of this today.’..ā€ ā€œWhen I got to the league, I thought I was preparing myself for the NBA journey… Just putting myself around people who knew what they were talking about and pushing me in the right direction.ā€

Tyrod Taylor says commanding a room isn’t about being the loudest person in it ā€œNot necessarily even just the loudness. It’s just the command. I think that’s more of a preparation. If you’re prepared and know what you’re talking about, you can go in and easily command the play.ā€ ā€œI don’t care if I tell you to run backwards this play, if I say it the right way, everyone in there should believe that this play is going to work.ā€ ā€œI used to hear, ā€˜You got two ears and one mouth for a reason.’ Listen more than you speak. And when you do speak, just make sure that it’s meaningful, that you say the right things and that you’re always respectful.ā€ ā€œProcessing things, hearing people out, not being quick to speak and not necessarily being the loudest in the room.ā€

Love this and I did the same thing as a 23-year old head college coach. Special growth happens in those situations that you cannot easily obtain the other way around regarding decisions to be made.
Stan Van Gundy turned down $37,000 to make $7,500 because his dad told him to choose responsibility over money ā€œIt’s 1983, And I ended up with two job opportunities at the same time. I could have gone as the assistant at Dartmouth… That job was paying like $37,000. Or I could go as the head coach to Castleton State, which was a Division III program, for $7,500 bucks a year. So like a five-times difference.ā€ ā€œI remember calling my dad. He said, ā€˜If you want to coach, take the responsibility over the money.’ ā€˜You’re 24. You don’t need the money.’ He said, ā€˜Once you have more money, you’ll never go backwards, so then you’d never take a job like that again.ā€™ā€ ā€œHe said ā€˜The bottom line is $7,500 is good for you because if they were paying more, you couldn’t get it!’ He said ā€˜They’re stuck with you a $7,500 and 2 years of experience. And so that’s what I did.ā€ ā€œAnd the opportunity to be a head coach, and inherit a really good team at that level, was great. And with great people who virtually every single one of them I’m still in touch with now. And again, learned a lot from them in terms of how to coach. I came in with all the answers… My dad would say ā€˜If you got all the answers, it’s only because you don’t know all the questions.’ I remember thinking that’s so true in any job. ā€œIt was great experience to be able to coach my own team. I was two years older than most of the players… It’s still the most fun I’ve ever had coaching, and I’ve coached a ton of NBA teams.ā€

I watched AAU basketball all weekend. I left with bad news for most players: Too many are building highlight reels before they’re building winning habits. The game ends. They lose. And before they’ve watched film or owned what needs to change… The post is already up. The highlight clip. The posed photo. Everyone wants exposure. But exposure doesn’t fix bad shot selection. It doesn’t make you defend. It doesn’t teach you how to impact winning. The camera should document the work. It shouldn’t become the reason for the work.

Cooper Kupp believes in order to perform at your best, you have to stop caring about the result ā€œEarly on mindset in the moment was… Don’t mess up. Make sure I run the right route. Get to the right spot. I’ve got so much going through my head.ā€ ā€œJared threw such a great pass…I end up missing it…A game-winning touchdown. The results aren’t always going to tell you the truth. What’s your process like? How are you going about things?ā€ ā€œPeople are going to hate to hear that this is my mindset… But you have to not care what happens. You have to not care what the result is.ā€ ā€œGet completely past… The wins and the losses. Get completely past… What the stats are going to be.ā€ ā€œI work from Monday to Saturday… To make sure I prepare… And do everything I possibly can… To be the best Cooper Kupp… That I can be on Sunday.ā€ ā€œThe things I eat. When I show up to work. The film I’m watching. I’m as intentional as I can possibly be.ā€ ā€œIt doesn’t matter. I’ve already done everything I possibly can… To be in that moment. All I can do is attack it. The results do not matter.ā€ ā€œI get to play from victory… Not for victory.ā€ ā€œThe worst thing I can do… Is look back and be like… Why didn’t I go after it? I’m just going to send it. If it doesn’t work… It doesn’t work.ā€
