Dialectic 60: Patrick Hsu! @pdhsu & @arcinstitute are combining biology, engineering, and AI to turn a sci-fi future into reality. Patrick got expelled from college at 13, returned at 15, later worked on early CRISPR breakthroughs, and teamed up with @SKonermann & @patrickc to found Arc. He works 3 jobs: core investigator at Arc, professor at Stanford, and venture partner at @thrivecapital. For all his intensity and ambition, he carries a lightness and boldness that is contagious. We discuss: - why research is 99% failure and even your best ideas kind of suck - infinite games and speedrunning school - the reach of GLP-1s and power laws in biotech - what makes a good biologist - Arc’s bet on people over projects - lab robots that finally work - AI-designed organisms and new forms of life - why heart disease could go the way of infectious disease - bro science, peptides, and biofuturism - research taste in the age of AI Timestamps: (0:00) Opening Highlights (1:39) Intro: Patrick Hsu (4:29) Start: Boldness, Infinite Games, & Ambition (12:54) GLP-1s and Power Laws in Biotechnology (20:17) Expelled at 13 and Falling for Biology (25:51) What Makes a Good Biologist, Research Taste, and Biology's Data Challenges (37:58) The Arc Model: Full-Stack Science (52:01) Betting on People, Style, & Learning to Simplify (57:22) Perturbation, World Models, and Evo (1:03:27) Virtual Cell Models (1:09:56) Designing Life: From Stem Cells to Genome Writing (1:18:39) Testing, Bro Science, and Human Data (1:24:26) Can It Exist vs. Will It Exist: Science Meets Markets (1:29:59) Biofuturism: Interoception, Peptides, Muscle Modulation, Sleep, and New Forms of Life (1:43:47) Fun, Obsolescence, Going Slow, and the Future @dialecticpod 60: Patrick Hsu - Speedrunning the Infinite Game - is available on all platforms, including X. 🇪🇺🇻🇳🇨🇳 Europe wants Vietnam’s minerals so it can stop leaning so hard on China. And Vietnam has plenty to offer, with big reserves of rare earths and tungsten, the stuff Europe needs for everything from phones to ammunition as it re-arms. That matters a lot more since last year, when China tightened its exports and left European factories scrambling. Now internal EU papers say Europe simply can’t afford to ignore Vietnam. So the plan is to throw loans and grants at Vietnam’s mines, and Vietnam’s leader is reportedly heading to Brussels next week to talk it over. The catch? Europe isn’t the only one knocking. The U.S., Australia and others are already chasing the same Vietnamese mines. Everyone’s trying to get off China’s minerals, and Vietnam is quickly becoming the place to do it. .@carlhjune expects his lab students to work on two projects at once: first is a “layup,” a safe, short-term experiment with potential for immediate success. Second is a “three-pointer,” a long-shot idea with potential to bring profound change. @USATODAY spr.ly/6015BGLtZW

A major discovery published TODAY in Nature may change how we think about gene editing, cellular aging, and cancer immunotherapy. Scientists at Columbia University have identified DRT10, an ancient bacterial antiviral defense system with an extraordinary capability: it uses RNA instructions to manufacture DNA. Unlike conventional CRISPR cutting mechanisms, DRT10 offers a fundamentally different approach to engineering genetic material. The most fascinating finding? DRT10 appears evolutionarily related to telomerase, the enzyme responsible for maintaining telomeres—the protective structures at the ends of chromosomes. Researchers have already demonstrated that DRT10 can synthesize human telomeric DNA repeats inside human cells. The implications are remarkable: • Could engineered telomere maintenance delay cellular senescence? Could therapeutic CAR-T cells be modified to persist longer and improve cancer treatment? • Could this ancient bacterial machinery inspire an entirely new generation of genome-engineering technologies? These remain unanswered questions. No anti-aging or cancer treatment has yet been demonstrated. But the scientific significance is profound: a bacterial defense mechanism may help us understand and eventually manipulate one of the fundamental processes governing chromosome stability and cellular lifespan. The bigger Eli Lilly gets, the more bullish I become. Growth doesn’t have to slow with scale. ⤴️
Another sign of $LLY unprecedented dominance in the BioTech and Pharma ecosystem - especially when compared to other Big Pharma companies such as $PFE $JNJ $NVS $NVO $BMY $ABBV $MRK $SNY $GSK and others, can be seen in this excellent Stifel’s chart which shows the huge gap in the number of deals made by Eli Lilly compared to those made by other big Pharma companies. Over the past two years Eli Lilly has made 77 (!) different in-Licensing and acquisition deals with large-cap BioTech companies, while the next in line - Roche - did only 41 deals. This is all part of @DaveARicks strategy to rebuild and to diversify the company’s pipeline and thus to prepare Eli Lilly for the “day after” its blockbuster GLP-1 drugs - Zepbound, Foundayo (orforglipron) and its new rising star Retatrutide.

awesome 📌
The era of computational biology is accelerating. Zuckerberg-backed Biohub, Google DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs, NIH and the U.S. DOE are joining forces in a nearly $2 billion effort to generate the biological data needed to build predictive AI models of cells. Their goal is to build a 'virtual cell' capable of predicting how cells respond to genes, drugs and other interventions.👀 And eventually, billions and trillions of cellular observations could become training data for these models. Instead of testing every biological hypothesis in the lab, scientists could increasingly test them digitally first, then experimentally validate the most promising predictions. That could accelerate drug discovery, disease research and our understanding of human biology.
