🚨5 days left to act!
The European Union’s clean energy future is under threat, as the potential appointment of two anti-nuclear commissioners risks derailing progress toward clean energy goals.
Act now- act.weplanet.org/eu-commissi…
With Teresa Ribera and Dan Jørgensen in line for key commission roles, their long-standing opposition to nuclear energy could block Europe’s nuclear revival, a key component of achieving climate goals. Despite overwhelming evidence that nuclear is vital to decarbonising the energy sector, these candidates prioritise ideology over science, leaving Europe vulnerable to higher emissions and energy instability.
On November 5th and November the 12th, Jørgensen and Ribera respectively, will undergo the EU confirmation hearings.
Now is the time to act—urge the European Parliament to reject these appointments and ensure climate-focused, science-based leadership for our energy transition.

It's completely understandable that the Emissions Gap media headlines focus on the bad news: if current policies continue we're looking at a catastrophic 3.1C warming. That means curtains for rainforests, coral, ice caps, unliveable conditions in tropics, superstorms etc. But...

If you do one thing today... please sign this petition to stop the appointment of anti-nuclear ideologues to the top energy jobs in the European Commission. Clean energy and climate targets are in serious danger if Ribera and Jørgensen get approved!

From Florida to Bangladesh, climate change is turbocharging extreme weather, affecting millions of lives.
Humanity is resilient, and we have unprecedented access to tools to help us adapt. However, the financial costs and impacts on human welfare will only grow if we fail to act.
We must urgently stabilise our climate.
Returned to Dhaka after visiting flood-affected areas. The cries of families without food or shelter still haunt me. The #climate #crisis is hitting the most vulnerable the hardest. @FarmingFutureBD @ScienceAlly @weplanetint

None of the people who preach this grew up washing clothes by hand.
I did. The women in my family did. You know what we all dreamed of? A laundry machine.
Making everyone’s lives shittier is not a winning strategy for solving climate change.
Replying to @aashisjo
Washing clothes by hand is a chore, oftentimes a lonely one. But it needn’t be. We could have communal washing facilities in each neighborhood where people can plan to come in groups to do their laundry together...

European Commission President @vonderleyen calls for more nuclear and renewable energy
"When we speak about our energy, we have to produce our own energy, more renewables, more nuclear, more efficiency," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Her comments were made at a security conference last week and signal a welcome shift toward a more inclusive clean energy policy across the EU.
Why this matters:
Excluding nuclear energy makes achieving our climate goals harder.
Retaining existing nuclear assets and ensuring equal access to clean energy investment for new nuclear energy can accelerate the clean energy transition.
That means lower emissions and greater energy security.

They’re gone. Despite the heroic effort of activists, Germany just blew up two cooling towers at the world-class, but shut down, Grafenrheinfeld nuclear plant.
The current German government is intent on destroying any chance of restarting the recently shutdown nuclear plants but there are growing calls for Germany to reverse their disastrous nuclear phase out.
Sign our petition calling on the German government to restart shutdown nuclear power plants where possible and to allow the construction of new reactors. act.weplanet.org/RestartGerm…
In April last year, Germany shut down its last three nuclear plants, much to the celebration of Greenpeace and other traditional environmental organisations.
Nobel Laureates and climate scientists signed an open letter to the German government asking them to retain their nuclear reactors. They said, "We call on you to use the remaining German nuclear power plants in order to alleviate the energy crisis and help achieve Germany’s climate targets"
It's been 18 months since the shutdown, during which the world experienced 13 months of record breaking heat. Climate experts warn Germany is on the brink of failing to meet its climate goals, while soaring electricity prices continue to put immense pressure on households and businesses.
Despite the clear signs of the disastrous impacts of the German shutdown, opponents of nuclear energy continue to resist its use both within Germany and globally. It’s paramount that they do not succeed.

Shipping giant Maersk is investigating nuclear propulsion as a means to decarbonise shipping.
They believe it could be achievable within 10 years, based on current technology and regulations.
We encourage governments to collaborate with shipping firms to accelerate the deployment of clean propulsion technologies.
The burning of fossil fuels for shipping contributes significantly to air pollution, resulting in deaths and health impacts, as well as exacerbating climate change.
