‘Sleepy Valley’ the name of the eastern end of Tantobie village in north Durham. No early records of ‘Tantoby’ but ‘-bie’ may be the Danish place-name suffix ‘by’ rare in north Durham but common in North Yorkshire. ‘-bie’ usually a Scots spelling of Danish suffix (eg Lockerbie).
