70 years ago today, approximately 20 000 women from across the country marched on the Union Buildings refusing to be silenced any longer. Their courage reshaped a nation's conscience and reminded us that freedom is never handed down, it is marched for, demanded, and won.
Today, we honour that legacy: the builders, the healers, the leaders, the quiet forces of change carrying that same spirit forward, and every woman still fighting for safety, equity, and dignity in South Africa. Their strength deserves more than a hashtag; it deserves a nation that keeps working to meet it.

"She transformed her home to a home for everybody."
- Graça Machel
Behind the political icon was a woman whose door was always open; whose home became a refuge, a meeting place, a family for exiles far from their own. That too is Adelaide Tambo's legacy.

"We had all resolved — the older generation — that whatever happens, we will fight tooth and nail, with our children, until freedom is won in South Africa."
These are Adelaide Tambo's own words. And they are a reminder of the generation of women who carried the struggle not as bystanders, but as architects thereof. Today, on her birthday, we celebrate her sacrifice and commitment.

18 July: two birthdays, one shared history. When their paths crossed on this day, Nelson Mandela and Adelaide Tambo would sit down for tea together. Today we honour them both, and continue to express gratitude for all they did to liberate South Africa. #MandelaDay #AdelaideTambo

50 years ago today, the youth of Soweto took to the streets.
They were protesting one thing: the right to be taught in their own language.
The apartheid regime's response was to open fire on approximately thousands of students. Many were killed and injured that day; and in the subsequent protests that occurred across the country.
"The news stunned and shocked us. To massacre children, on the scale of June 16th and after, was something utterly incredible, totally inhuman."
— O. R. Tambo
The Class of 76 changed history. We honour their courage and their sacrifice today...and every day.

The architect of mass action, Walter Sisulu was born on this day in 1912. Never kept a job because every time he found work, he mobilised workers to strike. He is credited for influencing the ANC's shift to a mass movement from the late 1940s onward.

Did you know? In 1938, Oliver Tambo and Joseph Mokoena broke academic barriers for Black students, with their high scores in Mathematics and Physical Science in the Transvaal being matched by only one White student that year. This prompted the government to probe their marks and ordered them to rewrite both subjects. Even after rewriting, both Tambo & Mokoena still topped the matric class of the year. - President Kenneth Kaunda

“Let all of us who live say that while we live Oliver Tambo will not die. May he, for his part, rest in peace. Go well, my brother and farewell, dear friend.”
- President Nelson Mandela (1993)
On this, the 33rd anniversary of his passing, we remember the incredible legacy of #OliverTambo.
#OnThisDay 66 years ago, apartheid police used live ammunition on peaceful, PAC protesters in #Sharpeville and #Langa, 69 people in Sharpeville and 2 people in Langa, and injuring over 200 people combined.
On this Human Rights Day, we remember the Sharpeville Massacre — a turning point that illuminated the brutal cost of oppression and the urgent demand for freedom, dignity, and justice for all.
#OliverTambo spoke of active action in the face of injustice, and the reality of that moment showed how state violence aimed to quell the cry for rights. The passage of time does not soften the pain, but it strengthens our resolve to safeguard human rights, advance equality, and honor those who stood up for justice.
Today, we recommit to building a future where the tragedies of the past propel us toward ensuring enduring human rights for all.
“No struggle depends on one person — but there are exceptions to every rule. Comrade O.R. is that exception.” — Nelson Mandela on his close friend #ORTambo, 1991.

We are thrilled to be at Makerere University for the 3rd annual gathering of O.R. Tambo Africa Research Chairs Initiative.
This initiative truly embodies the spirit of O.R. -- his passion for education, African knowledge. sovereignty, and cooperation across African nations.
As the Foundation's CEO, Natasha Allie said in her opening remarks, "We are united by a conviction that the legacy of O.R. Tambo is not a monument to be admired, but a movement to be advanced. It lives wherever African scholars push the boundaries of knowledge, and wherever research is used to uplift communities and strengthen our shared humanity."
