Guided Tours of Pope's Grotto and Marble Hill House. Pope's Grotto Preservation Trust and English Heritage are pleased to announce joint tours of Alexander Pope's grotto and Marble Hill House together with its grotto. This is a unique opportunity to visit two 18th century grottos and one of the most important Palladian villas, accompanied by expert guides. The tour will start at 10 am at Pope's Grotto followed by a visit to St Mary's Church in Twickenham to view Pope's final resting place and memorials to his parents. Visitors can then have lunch in the many bars and restaurants in picturesque Church Street or at Marble Hill's Coach House Café (please note lunch is not included in the ticket price). In the afternoon, you will enjoy a guided tour of Henrietta Howard's neo-Palladian Villa and end the experience with a visit to the recently-restored garden grotto, finishing at about 3:15 pm. There are three offerings from April to August. Tickets cost £35 and there's a timetable for the day in each event's listing on TicketSource. ticketsource.co.uk/popesgrot…

We love the web resource 'At the Circulating Library'! Our latest blog about Margaret Leicester Warren's 1860 review of Cranford wouldn't be half as interesting without it! @3VolumeNovel @shelvesofbooks @TableyHouse ow.ly/W6vQ50M4lTF

Instead of writing, I am being an art detective🕵️‍♂️. I am thrilled as I discovered a Martin Archer Shee painting wrongly sold in 2013 by Sotheby's as the work of John Opie in NYC 1st Feb 2013. The print on the left was from 1825 catalogue of @TableyHouse artworks by J. Young. 🥳

The original was once a favourite in the collection of Sir John Fleming Leicester's at Tabley. Nice to see it in this form, in the public realm again!
On display at the Twickenham Museum is this lovely canvas reproduction of JMW Turner’s ‘Pope’s Villa at Twickenham’. (1808). It depicts Alexander Pope’s famous villa in a state of dilapidation with its windows broke, ceiling caved in and scaffolding in place. The then owner, Baroness Howe, had decided that she was fed up of visitors turning up to see Pope‘s famous Villa, grotto and garden, so she decided to demolish the villa much to JMW Turner’s fury. To the left are a group of figures. One holds a Corinthian capital whilst the second keeps hold of an empty gilded picture frame. The inference is that these items have been ‘liberated’ from Pope’s Villa by the duo. Lady Howe was known locally as ‘Queen of the Goths’ because of this act of vandalism to Pope’s iconic building. JMWTurner would also write poetry eulogising the villa and condemning the author of its destruction. He would also take a cutting from Pope’s famous weeping willow tree and plant it around his own small pools at his garden at Sandycombe Lodge, @TwickMuseum @TurnersHouse

With just over a month until we open our doors again to the public (3rd April 2025) we are finishing off large conservation projects and installing our #Turner250 displays. Time to plan your visit to Tabley, where Turner himself stayed in 1808!

Our support goes out to The Smoker pub, Plumley Nr Knutsford. With so much shared history we very much hope that the blaze was contained and much of this historic building saved. The name 'The Smoker' comes from the racehorse gifted to Lord de Tabley by the Prince Regent.

Hill Street, Mayfair. This building was once residence to John Fleming Leicester who opened a gallery of British Art here in 1818, possibly the only one of its kind at the time, to display works by British artists to a select public. Yes public. #BritishArt #Regency

The gallery was sold on his death in 1827 but reviews and records of the gallery still exist, as do the collections that were amassed to fill it. The property is now to let, spotted by our Collections Officer on her recent trip to Frieze Masters.
