In 1793, a French diplomat openly defied George Washington, insulted him to his face and tried to drag the United States into a war. But in the end, the gracious Washington saved his life.
His name was Edmond-Charles Genêt. France sent him to America as its minister, but he was a man on a mission of disruption.
He landed in Charleston instead of the capital, and before he ever met the president, he was handing out commissions to American privateers to attack British ships and raising men to strike Spanish territory...all of it a direct violation of the neutrality Washington had just declared.
When Washington told him to stop, Genêt refused. He outfitted another warship and sent it to sea in open defiance. He sneered that Washington "was not the sovereign of the country" and threatened to go over the president's head and appeal directly to the American people.
But the ground shifted under him. Back in France, the radicals had taken power, and Genêt's faction was being led to the guillotine. His own government recalled him, which meant a death sentence the moment he stepped off the boat.
The man had spent a year defying and belittling George Washington. He had every reason to expect nothing from him. Instead, Washington granted him asylum and let him stay.
Genêt never saw France again. He married the daughter of New York's governor, became an American citizen and lived out his life as a farmer in New York.
Spared by the very man he had tried to humiliate.

Oct 19, 1774: A merchant in Annapolis, Maryland, set fire to his own ship with a load of tea on board while a crowd watched from shore.
After the Boston Tea Party, Parliament punished Boston by closing its port. Colonies up and down the coast agreed to stop importing British goods in protest, especially tea, which carried a tax Americans refused to pay.
On Oct 14 the brig Peggy Stewart, named after the owner's daughter, sailed into Annapolis. It was carrying over 50 indentured servants and about a ton of tea in 17 chests. The owner, Anthony Stewart, wanted to land his passengers, who had been stuck on a miserable voyage. To get the ship cleared, he paid the tax on the tea.
That was a mistake. Word spread that Stewart had paid the hated tax, and an angry crowd gathered. There were threats to tar and feather him and to burn his house, with his family inside.
Stewart offered to burn the tea. The crowd said that wasn't enough. So on Oct 19, Stewart and the men who had imported the tea rowed out to the ship, and Stewart set it on fire himself. The Peggy Stewart burned to the waterline in front of the town, with the tea still in her hold.
Stewart was a Loyalist, and he eventually fled. The Annapolis Tea Party gets much less attention than the one in Boston, but in Annapolis they burned the whole ship.

In the middle of the great afternoon charge at Cedar Creek, a young cavalryman came upon four armed Confederate infantrymen. He had a saber. They had rifles. And yet it was the four of them who ended up surrendering, handing over their weapons and their regiment's flag to one determined man on horseback.
Eri Woodbury was not a career soldier. He was a scholarly young New Englander, a student who had left his studies to enlist in the 1st Vermont Cavalry, part of the hard-riding Union mounted forces that Phil Sheridan was using to such devastating effect in the Shenandoah Valley. By October 19, 1864, Woodbury was a seasoned trooper, and he was about to be in the thick of one of the most dramatic reversals of the war.
The morning at Cedar Creek had been a Union disaster, the army surprised and routed. But after Sheridan's famous ride rallied the beaten soldiers, the afternoon belonged to the Union. Sheridan launched a massive counterattack, and his cavalry swept forward on the flanks to turn the Confederate retreat into a rout. Woodbury and the 1st Vermont charged into the collapsing enemy, and in the chaos and dust of that pursuit, individual troopers found themselves among knots of fleeing Confederate soldiers.
That is when Woodbury came upon four Confederate infantrymen falling back, still armed with their rifles. In the swirling confusion of a broken army, with Union cavalry everywhere and panic spreading, Woodbury did not wait to count the odds. He drew his saber, rode straight at the four men, and ordered them to surrender. The sheer boldness and the hopelessness of their situation did the rest. The four soldiers gave up, handing over their rifles, and, crucially, their regimental colors, the battle flag of the 12th North Carolina.
Capturing an enemy battle flag, as we have seen again and again, was considered one of the supreme acts of valor a soldier could perform, the tangible proof of fighting into the heart of the enemy. Woodbury had done it almost single-handedly, bluffing four armed men into surrender with a blade. He was sent to Washington to personally present the captured flag, one of the many trophies the Union cavalry brought off that triumphant field.
For his gallantry at Cedar Creek, Eri Woodbury received the Medal of Honor. He was one of more than twenty men, officers and enlisted, decorated for that single battle, a reflection of just how much desperate, close-quarters heroism filled the Union counterattack that destroyed Early's army. After the war, true to his roots, Woodbury returned to the life of the mind, becoming an educator. But for one afternoon in the Shenandoah, a student-turned-trooper rode down four armed men with a saber and came away carrying their flag.

Oct 18, 1931: Thomas Edison died at his home in West Orange, New Jersey, at 84. His best friend Henry Ford wanted his last breath.
Edison collected over 1,000 American patents in his lifetime. He gave the world the phonograph, a practical electric light bulb, an electric power system to run it, and the motion picture camera. Maybe his biggest invention was the modern research lab, a team of people working together full-time to invent things. He had been mostly deaf since boyhood.
Henry Ford had worked for Edison's electric company as a young engineer, and Edison encouraged him to keep building his gasoline car. They became close friends and went on long camping trips together.
When Edison was dying, Ford reportedly asked Edison's son Charles to hold a test tube near his father's mouth to capture his final breath. Charles sealed it. The test tube is still on display at the Henry Ford museum in Michigan.
On the night of Edison's funeral, President Herbert Hoover asked Americans to dim their lights for one minute in his honor.

🚨 HOLY SMOKES. In a bombshell revelation, James O'Keefe just caught Abdul El Sayed having "OVERSEAS DONORS" illegally routing money into his campaign — and that's according to a CAMPAIGN OFFICIAL
Come clean and DROP OUT, NOW!
“You know, [Mohamed] has people from overseas that donate to him." 🤯
Then he admits: "No it is not allowed."
If true, THIS IS ILLEGAL.
Confirming what we all suspected.
This is what happens when you run candidates who are foreigners first. Abdul is Palestine, Gaza and Islamist first, Americans last
The same official also allegedly warned that denouncing Hamas could cost El-Sayed support. WOW.
This comes on top of the dual-citizenship controversy, after a video surfaced of El Sayed allegedly saying he's a citizen of Egypt
The FEC needs to look into this TODAY!

🚨 JUST NOW: Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton just said it's time to END dual citizenship for members of Congress
"If we're gonna elect people, they need to be COMMITTED to the United States."
"If they've got other allegiances, WE GOT A PROBLEM. We CANNOT allow that in our elected representatives!" — Paxton to @bennyjohnson
He's right.
And this must apply to EVERY COUNTRY. American only 🇺🇸
In fact, this should be the bare minimum.

A boy walks into a pet shop and asks how much the puppies cost.
"Between 300 and 500 euros," the owner replies.
The boy reaches into his pocket, takes out some coins, and says,
"I only have 100 euros, but... could I at least see the puppies?"
The owner calls Lady, the puppies' mother, who comes running, followed by five little balls of fur. One of the puppies is left behind, visibly limping.
"What's wrong with that one?" the boy asks, pointing at the last one.
"He was born with a hip problem," the man explains. "Unfortunately, he'll limp his whole life."
Suddenly, a smile breaks out on the boy's face and he exclaims excitedly,
"That's the dog I want!"
The owner frowns.
"I can't sell you that one. If you want it, I'll give it to you; it's worthless."
The boy is silent for a moment, then looks at the man determinedly and says,
"I don't want you to give it to me. It's worth as much as the others. I'll pay you the 100 euros I have and 10 more each month until the price is paid."
The owner, surprised, replies:
"But, boy, this dog will never be able to run or jump like the others. He won't even play well!"
The boy then lifts up his pants, revealing a prosthesis on his left leg.
"Sir," he says calmly, "I'm not a very good runner either. And this pup will need someone who understands him.

Hitler had been dead for three weeks when Churchill asked his generals for a plan to attack the Soviet Union. German soldiers were supposed to march on his side.
The plan was called Operation UNTHINKABLE.
In May 1945, British military planners examined a surprise attack on the Red Army, with July 1 set as the starting date. The offensive would involve British and American forces, Polish troops, and rearmed Wehrmacht divisions.
But Stalin already knew what was coming from Soviet intelligence. In June, Marshal Zhukov unexpectedly regrouped Soviet forces and strengthened their defenses.
Meanwhile, British generals were doing the math. The Red Army outnumbered Western forces in Central Europe by roughly three to one. A quick victory looked unlikely, and a full-scale war against the USSR could drag on for years.
Churchill never launched the attack. But he had ordered his generals to prepare for war against the very country Britain had just fought alongside.
As Leo Tolstoy put it, “A word is an action.”

In 1993, Kevin Costner thought quite highly of himself after starring in The Bodyguard with Whitney Houston, a massive hit. His next part was in a film directed byClint Eastwood. Now Eastwood takes shit from nobody, and he likes to do all scenes in one take. Every actor or actress is expected to be on set on time, say the lines, shoot, and be done. No nonsense
Costner did the unthinkable — he kept Eastwood waiting. Stayed in his trailer and sent a message that he “wasn’t ready”. Kept the whole production waiting, in fact, for a scene. And the old director didn’t flinch, didn’t get mad, he just called for Costner’s stunt double who looks a lot like the guy from a distance. Said: “Give him Costner’s costume!” So the stunt double goes and changes, and they shoot the scene with him, instead. Before you know it, the scene is done.
Kevin Costner comes out of his trailer an hour late, says he’s ready to shoot the scene now. And it’s already done! And this is why I admire Clint Eastwood — he doesn’t accept diva behavior. You’re all members of a team, from the big name actors to the sound guy or the lady doing the makeup and no one is treated any different or given special treatment.

Oh do I have a true story for you today…
Trip to Walmart today, I saw
an elderly lady stocking shelves. She dropped an item, I picked it up for her. In a very feeble voice, she says thank you. I asked how old she was, in her late 80’s. We talked a minute or two, she is going through so much, trying to survive.
I gave her a $100 bill, told her to get something she needed.
Why is anyone this old, in the United States, working? Why do politicians insist on taking care of the rest of the world? I'll never understand it, they are suppose to work for us!
Something needs to change. All I see is no respect, no discipline, no morals, want everything free!
It's a damn shame! People wonder why I hate politicians so bad!
We need term limits, NOW!
I’m not a millionaire, struggle myself. But, I’ll be damned if I’ll watch an elderly person, near 90 years old do this shit, just to survive!

When I was seven in Japan, I thought the adults were terrible liars.
Every morning at the train station, grown men bowed to each other and said, "Otsukaresama desu."
The literal translation is: "You are exhausted."
I could not understand it. It was 8:00 AM. No battle had taken place. Their suits were pressed and their hair was combed. Why greet a comrade by claiming he is dying of fatigue before he has even drawn his sword?
I believed adults were made of solid iron. I thought their strength was infinite.
Thirty years later, I stepped into a corporate elevator in Chicago on a Monday morning.
A man in a navy blazer stood beside me. We locked eyes for one second.
He had three hours of sleep. A broken water heater. Two sick children. Sixty unread messages from a vice president. He was standing upright purely through the structural tension of his necktie.
I looked down at my own reflection. My spirit was operating on four percent battery.
The truth struck me with the force of an iron club.
The greeting was never a polite metaphor.
It was a field hospital triage.
We do not work until we are tired. We wake up with mortal wounds and charge into battle anyway.

We thought we were going to freeze to death before morning.
March 12, 2011. Along the freezing coast of Aomori, near Hachinohe and Misawa.
The tsunami had smashed our fishing port.
The power grid was dead across the entire region.
As darkness fell, the temperature plunged well below freezing.
In our crowded community center, mothers were wrapping soaked children in newspapers and cardboard boxes to block the draft.
We had no heaters. We had no warm water.
Nobody knew that just a few miles away, behind the gates of Misawa Air Base, something extraordinary was happening.
It wasn't an official Pentagon directive.
It was American airmen of the 35th Fighter Wing, their wives, their husbands, and their teenage kids.
Word spread through the base housing neighborhoods:
“Our Japanese neighbors are freezing in the dark.”
Within an hour, every kitchen on that American base was blazing.
Military spouses emptied the base commissary shelves with their own money.
They baked thousands of loaves of bread, made mountains of warm sandwiches, and boiled gallons upon gallons of steaming hot cocoa and chicken broth.
And then they did something that still makes people in Aomori cry today.
American mothers and fathers walked into their own bedrooms and stripped the heavy quilts, comforters, and fleece blankets right off their own beds.
American children pulled their own warm winter coats out of their closets and wrote “GANBATTE” (Stay Strong) in crayon on paper notes tucked inside the pockets.
A convoy of pickup trucks and vans rolled through the snow to our dark shelter.
When the doors opened, it wasn't just soldiers.
It was young American airmen and their wives, carrying steaming thermoses of sweet cocoa and armloads of colorful, floral-patterned family quilts that still smelled like warm American homes.
An American mother wrapped her own thick bedroom quilt around my shivering seven-year-old son, hugged me tight in the snow without saying a word, and cried with me.
You can order an army to march.
You cannot order a mother to give up the blanket off her own child's bed.
That came straight from the American heart. 🇺🇸☕🇯🇵

October 19, 1781. Cornwallis did not show up to his own surrender. He sent a brigadier with his sword and said he was ill.
Nobody believed him then and nobody believes him now.
The surrender at Yorktown is the moment the American Revolution was effectively won, and the thing worth understanding about it is that it was not really an American victory in the way the story usually gets told. It was a Franco-American operation that worked because of a French fleet.
Here is the actual mechanism.
Cornwallis had marched around the Carolinas and Virginia all year winning battles that cost him men he could not replace, and in August he dug in at Yorktown on the York River, on the assumption that the Royal Navy could reinforce or evacuate him whenever he wanted. That assumption was the entire basis of British strategy in America.
Then de Grasse brought a French fleet up from the Caribbean and beat the British fleet off the Virginia Capes in September. Not a crushing victory, just enough. The British fleet went back to New York to repair and Cornwallis's door closed.
Washington and Rochambeau, who had been planning to attack New York, dropped that plan and marched roughly 450 miles south in a few weeks to get on top of him before the navy came back.
By early October there were around 16,000 Franco-American troops digging siege lines in front of about 8,000 British, Hessian and Loyalist defenders, with French engineers doing the technical work because formal siegecraft was a European specialty the Continental Army simply did not have.
Then it became mathematics. Dig the first parallel, bring the guns up, pound the works, dig a second parallel closer, repeat. Washington reportedly fired the first gun of the siege himself on October 9.
The British redoubts 9 and 10 were taken by storm on the night of October 14, redoubt 10 by Americans under Alexander Hamilton, who had pushed hard for a field command and got it. That put Allied guns close enough to make the position untenable.
Cornwallis tried to evacuate across the river to Gloucester Point on the night of the 16th. A storm scattered the boats.
On the morning of the 17th a drummer boy climbed onto the parapet and beat for a parley while an officer waved a white handkerchief, and the guns went quiet. Terms took two days to settle.
On the 19th, Cornwallis surrendered 7,087 officers and men, around 900 seamen, 144 cannon, and a collection of ships including a frigate and thirty transports.
He did not attend. He pleaded illness and sent Brigadier General Charles O'Hara out with his sword instead.
What happened next in the standard account is that O'Hara tried to present the sword to Rochambeau, the French commander, rather than to Washington, which would have made the surrender a French affair and the Americans incidental. Rochambeau refused and pointed him to Washington. Washington refused on the grounds that a subordinate should not surrender to a commander in chief, and directed him to Benjamin Lincoln, who had himself been forced to surrender Charleston to the British the year before.
Lincoln accepted the sword and handed it straight back.
That sequence is reported in multiple accounts and is almost certainly substantially true, though the dialogue gets polished in the retelling, so treat the exact words as tradition.
The other famous detail is the music. The story is that the British bands played a tune called "The World Turned Upside Down" as the troops marched out.
Now the honest part. That claim does not appear in contemporary records of the surrender and seems to show up decades later. It is a perfect detail, which is usually a warning sign. Take it as legend rather than fact.
What is documented is the humiliation itself. The British and Hessians marched between two lines, French on one side and Americans on the other, grounded their arms, and some of the men wept. British officers reportedly looked only at the French the entire way, refusing to acknowledge the Americans, which is its own kind of statement.
Fighting did not stop. The war went on at sea and in the Caribbean and in India for another two years. But Yorktown broke the political will in London. The North government fell in March 1782, peace talks opened, and the Treaty of Paris was signed on September 3, 1783.
Two armies, one navy, eight years, and it came down to a British general betting that the Royal Navy would always be there and being wrong once.
