Texans have seen massive homeowners & auto insurance rate increases over the past decade. It’s not sustainable. These problems can’t all be fixed in one #TxLege session, but lawmakers must take steps next year to provide some relief. See below for TCA’s recommendations. #TxInsurance
Last week's Senate Business & Commerce Committee hearing included compelling testimony from several energy experts and consumer advocates, including TCA, on the need to reform the TDU rate making process. See below for TCA president Sandie Haverlah's opening statement and submitted testimony. #TxLege #TxEnergy
Wow! We all know inflation is bad right now, but 10,000% inflation?
CenterPoint should show its math and produce invoices to justify this huge increase.
Another proof point why we need TDU rate reform!

New @Texas2036 polling: Keeping electric bills affordable is a top priority for Texans; reliability is an equal part of the equation. #TxEnergy #TxLege
Five years after Winter Storm Uri, Texas voters still rank reliability as their top #txelectricity issue despite concerns about affordability.

More from Senator @LoisKolkhorst on TDUs: “You’re not pricing risk. You have no risk. The risk is with small business owners right now. When you talk about regulated monopolies, I believe the model is old and needs to be looked at.” #TxLege #TxEnergy
Senator @LoisKolkhorst on TDUs in this morning’s Senate Committee on Business and Commerce hearing: “We have TDUs with 9.6% rate of return — that’s incredible.” #TxLege #TxEnergy
Senator @Menendez4Texas on TDUs in this morning’s Senate Committee on Business and Commerce hearing: “Their risk is diminished. In the business world when you have lower risks you expect a lower return, but (electric utilities) are getting a higher return.” #TxLege #TxEnergy
The Texas Senate Committee on Business and Commerce will be holding a hearing this morning that includes electricity transmission issues. TCA President Sandie Haverlah will be testifying. #TxLege #TxEnergy

TDU charges are driving Texans' electric bills through the roof.
From new reporting by @KPRC2 on CenterPoint:
"In 2020, the rate was 4.05 cents per kilowatt-hour, in addition to a $4.90 monthly fee.
In 2026, the rate is 6.41 cents per kilowatt-hour, while the $4.90 monthly fee remains.
For customers who use 2,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each month, the difference in the rate amounts to about $566 more per year."
Most Texans can't afford an extra $566 a year.
Texas needs TDU reform now.

Sandie Haverlah, the president of the Texas Consumer Association, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group, described the retention payments as "tone-deaf and unjustified," citing high electricity costs, in a statement released Thursday afternoon.
"At a time of economic anxiety when a majority of Texans believe our state is off on the wrong track, it's irresponsible to give six- and seven-figure raises to executives and board members," Haverlah said.

Amid rising electricity costs, the Texas Consumer Association, which advocates for lowering consumer costs, told Flores and the ERCOT board to "read the room" in a statement Thursday.
"As a quasi-public entity funded by fees ultimately paid by consumers, ERCOT must do better,” wrote TCA President Sandie Haverlah. “At a time of economic anxiety when a majority of Texans believe our state is off on the wrong track, it’s irresponsible to give six- and seven-figure raises to executives and board members.”

If your electricity bills are too high and rates are sky high, this explains it! Time to reform TDU rate making. #TxEnergy #TxLege

"Among major spending categories, energy prices saw the biggest leap in the last decade — a 65% jump — driven by gas prices, surging demand, natural disaster recovery and hardening costs and expanding transmission infrastructure. Housing grew by 44% and food rose by 41%, outpacing the state’s overall inflation of 35%. Healthcare costs rose 25% from 10 years ago." - @TexasTribune
Next year, #txlege must tackle the three prongs of affordability the state can have the biggest impact on:
💰Electricity transmission charges
💰Health care
💰Homeowners & auto insurance.
