New: An alternative interim report on school inspection
educationuncovered.co.uk/ana…
Former HMIs Colin Richards and Frank Norris analyse the independent report, commissioned by Ofsted, which had sought to set out providers’ views on the recently-reformed system.

The latest Ofsted data (n = 3,189 schools) reveals a persistent association between deprivation and weaker curriculum and teaching judgements.
Among secondary schools, those serving the most disadvantaged communities were nearly 4 times as likely to be graded below expected as those serving the least disadvantaged communities.
Does this new framework STILL penalise disadvantaged schools?

Trust is hard won and easily lost. Ofsted can say it has always considered context, but that claim doesn't reflect the experience of many school leaders. Dismissing those concerns rather than acknowledging them risks making the trust gap wider, not narrower.

Martyn has been clear he encourages and welcomes robust (but appropriate) challenge from the outside.
If Ofsted are serious about that, and I would hope they are, then they should *welcome* the interest of myself in this data and be bending over backwards to share, not hide it.

Demands that Martyn Oliver should go are becoming more insistent. So let's be very, very clear: that the current inspection framework would damage teachers, schools and children was well known before it was implemented. I wrote this over a year ago.

I'm reposting a tweet I posted last summer. Today, the NGA revealed the headlines of a recent survey of members on Ofsted. The image captures the problem and how Ofsted is still not facing up to reality. Well done Emma Balchin for continuing to call for radical reform.

Yes. Yes it does. ☹️
RIP Ruth Perry, the nine other headteachers cited in Coroner’s reports and all the others damaged and forced into early retirement by Ofsted. Inspections and pressures. 😢

When you do multilevel, effects disappear. Mind you, still a nice study, but not strong support for 'anything-first'.

Given tbe gravity of the current situation, it is very unhelpful that this story is buried behind a paywall.
Can @Ofstednews put a fre copy on their Web page?

Martyn, it is so much more than just the Trade Unions and professional associations.
Martyn Oliver: Inspections are a vital tool for improving schools, whatever the unions might say | The Telegraph telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…
Positive news and a step in the right direction. Hopefully it will request it's members not to inspect
.@ASCL_UK passes a motion of no confidence in Ofsted’s leadership and in the watchdog's ability to address what the union describes as ‘the damage being done by the new inspection system’

If outcomes were a pure measure of educational quality, we'd barely need inspections. We'd just rank schools by results. The reality is that outcomes reflect both the quality of education and the barriers children face. Ignoring either tells only half the story.

Ofsted can slow down and damage an already improving school. It is not a force for good for the children and families in the school. It is not about a framework or the HMCI. It is a fundamentally flawed approach to school accountability that does long term damage in numerous ways

We had a model of instructional design that demonstrably worked for teaching early reading/Math since the late 60s. Then education academics spent the next 50 years demonising it and training new teachers to do the exact opposite - skills-based/choose your own adventure curriculum design, minimally guided instruction, contempt for standardised testing etc and now we are where we are.

It took Ofsted 17 years (2009) to judge a Grammar school as inadequate and further three years for another. Just saying cos some Grammar schools are amazing while others...similar to most non-Grammar schools tbh. Fwks traditionally favour those that select pupils.

If they make judgements more contextual this will also identify some schools in more advantaged contexts that are not doing as well as they could given those advantages. 'Coasting' as some call them.

Richard, did you call out this conduct? One action is not a reason for dismissing CVA outright. I worked extensively with this academic bera.ac.uk/person/george-lec… in developing the Fairer Schools Index with @NP_Partnership. No measure is perfect, as Prof Leckie explains well.

There’ll be no shortage of soothsayers and political opportunists claiming credit if Ofsted falls. I don’t care who gets the credit, only that change comes. But three and a half years have taught me this: without political will, even the strongest case is shouting into the wind…

There goes a comment from someone who has clearly not read the Coroner's investigation following Ruth's death. Shameful and so wrong.
It is not the sign of a functioning political system that the tragic death of one mentally ill headteacher has managed to rip up the system by which we assess the performance of our schools.
It has opened a Pandora’s box of blackmail: ‘Don’t mark down my school or I’ll kill myself’.
Stop bending to this insanity. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/09…
