I also allowed author Buzz Bissinger access to my research.
Broncos-Cardinals broadcast showed ad for new film, "Mosquito Bowl." Nearly 25 years ago, I did much research and interviewing and told story of Marines' 1944 touch football game in connection with my Colorado and ESPN journalism work and my book, "Third Down and a War to Go. " Two of my father's Wisconsin teammates played in Mosquito Bowl on Guadalcanal before they were killed on Okinawa. Read more here: terryfrei.com/mosquitobowl.h…

And to Brent Peterson.
harpethhills.com/obituaries/… This is inexcusably tardy, but heartfelt. Stick taps for long-time NHL forward, assistant coach and broadcaster Brent Peterson. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2002 and fought it for 24 years before his death last month in the Nashville area. Incredibly and courageously, he remained in coaching until 2011. He will remain an inspiration. Yes, for me, too. I got to know Brent when he was co-coach and then head coach of major junior's Portland Winter Hawks. Brent had a million friends in and around the game. Even sportswriters. We tried to talk and catch up each time our paths crossed after that, in Nashville or Denver. I'm convinced he would have been a successful NHL head coach if not for the Parkinson's. Brent's career: hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdis…

By the way, Orange Crush is the '77 defense, NOT a roster-deep nickname. Orange Crush is Gradishar, Wright, Jackson, Chavous, Carter, Alzado, Swenson ... I realize there are nits to be picked on this, but I usually call the entire offense -- not just Craig Morton and Haven Moses -- the M&M Connection.
There will be references to this tonight, but it'll be even more celebrated next season. The 50th-anniversary benchmark of the 1977 Broncos' magical season and first Super Bowl appearance is coming up in 2027. I told the story in "'77: Denver, the Broncos, and a Coming of Age," released in 2007. After all these years, the book remains available from the usual prime sales sites accessible via: terryfrei.com/77.html I had a blast writing it as a Time Capsule. I hope that older readers will be reminded of what that team meant to Denver, and that younger readers -- even those who were not yet born in 1977 -- -- will enjoy it as a learning experience. Polite reminder: My research and the book are my property, legally and ethically. Most of the players and other figures involved in the 1977 storyline were alive and available for me to interview. Those interviews were recorded, transcribed and used in the writing process and/or in the book itself.

If you're enjoying @espn 's series on Nick Saban, here's my December 1995 @sportingnews story on Saban that was a year-long narrative of a college program -- and its new coach -- in transition: terryfrei.com/saban.html I targeted Michigan State and began the reporting before Saban's hire, when he still was Bill Belichick's DC at Cleveland. In other words. this is about Nick Saban before he was NICK SABAN. Below, the first two pages of the story as published. I've periodically updated it on my site over the years.
