“Focus on the next game.”
Every footballer hears it. Almost nobody tells them what happens when the games stop.
@cyruschristie has spent 15+ years in the game and decided not to wait to find out. He’s my guest on Episode 65 of The Football Economy 🎙️🧵
Second bottom of League One.
Four teams go down.
Everyone assuming the drop was inevitable.
That club was @LaticsOfficial2, where @DrTomMarkham was a key senior executive. 🧵
A balance sheet can tell you what a club can afford, but not how a club will perform.
Nothing about the resources had improved. What changed was the belief that everyone was pulling in the same direction.
If you’re running a team in a tough spot, ask what have we got?
But also ask what are we all pulling towards?

In the episode we get into:
How family legacy and visualization shaped his mindset
Why decisions made in the boardroom land hardest on players
What trust and betrayal looked like during injury recovery
What a more empathetic, transparent sporting director could look like
Cyrus’s advice for players: don’t wait for football to end to start planning, and don’t let money be the only support you look for.

What separates @DrTomMarkham from other football M&A advisors? A valuation model carries his name.
His central message on The Football Economy: valuation in football has been oversimplified.
Here’s his reasoning 🧵
Traditional methods struggle too. So many European clubs are loss making that discounted cash flow doesn’t make sense.
Tom reviewed every way of valuing a company, tested them on clubs, & asked whether any worked consistently. That’s how the Markham Multivariate Model was born.
The lesson: a club isn’t a standard company, so a standard shortcut gives you a number that looks precise and isn’t.
Before asking “what’s the multiple?”, ask “what exactly am I valuing?”

A football club has no standard price tag. So who decides what one is worth, and how do they defend the number when billions are on the line? 🧵
Episode 64 of The Football Economy is live with Dr. Tom Markham 🎙️
What we get into:
🟢 What 2008 taught football about credit and liquidity
🟢 Why revenue multiples only tell part of the story
🟢 What could push the Glazers to sell @ManUtd
🟢 Why promotion and relegation can rewrite a club's value overnight
Tom's advice for breaking into football M&A: the models matter, but the people you know and the trust you've built matter more.

"Compliance has had a negative connotation... it was usually the function that says no or stops a deal."
James Okeyemi, Financial Crime Advisory Manager at Macquarie Group, on why that view of compliance is outdated. On The Football Economy 🎙️
Rooney's frustration and James's point are the same gap: checks that should be built in from the start, not applied years later. Compliance only works if it's in the room while a deal is shaped, not called in to defend it afterward.
