Fascinating #ALS #MND study by @AmmarAlChalabi and @ShorterLab about the impact of exercise on ALS. What they found: 🔹Hard, strenuous exercise was linked to getting ALS appx 10 yrs earlier 🔹Highly active people Sx onset ≈ 54–58 years. 🔹Inactive people Sx onset ≈ 63–64 years. 🔹Exercise did not raise the chance of developing ALS 🔹Head injury was linked to higher ALS risk (about 1.7-fold), but not to earlier onset. This paper split people with ALS into three activity groups based on lifetime leisure exercise: highly active, active, and inactive. None were professional athletes—just recreational exercisers. After accounting for sex, C9orf72, and head injury, the highly active group ≈ 2.3–2.8x risk of earlier onset vs inactive people. But strenuous activity was not associated wth speed of progression or mortality. The authors treat strenuous exercise as a possible “accelerator” in age of onset in susceptible people, not a reason for the public to stop exercising. But for those at risk, it may justify the personalized approach to slow the age of disease onset. #endALS #fALS

Lou Gehrig's disease is named after a baseball legend, but its real name describes exactly what's happening in the body. ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. A-myo-trophic comes from the Greek language. "A" means no. "Myo" refers to muscle, and "Trophic" means nourishment – "No muscle nourishment." When a muscle has no nourishment, it "atrophies" or wastes away. "Lateral" identifies the areas in a person's spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located. As this area degenerates, it leads to scarring or hardening ("sclerosis") in the region. Learn more: youtu.be/uHb-tfuTL8A?si=dtSt…

A 79-year-old grandmother was getting ready for her vacation, completely unaware that the pilot waiting to greet her on board was actually her own granddaughter. The surprise came just before boarding, turning an ordinary trip into a beautiful and unforgettable moment. 🥹❤️✈️

For people living with ALS, accessing care shouldn’t depend on how easily they can get to a doctor’s office. Thank you, @RepMarkAlford, for cosponsoring the CONNECT for Health Act and supporting expanded telehealth access! Help pass this bill: bit.ly/ALSConnect
