She is only getting $791 per month because she was born in 1924 and there's a 'catch 22' (notch) for her. It is interesting that the Federal Government provides a single refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890. Each can also obtain an additional $580 in Social Assistance, for a total of $2,470 a month. This compares to a single pensioner, who after contributing to the growth and development of America for 40 to 50 years, can only receive a monthly maximum of $1,012 in Old Age Pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement. Maybe our Pensioners should apply as Refugees! Consider sending this to all your American friends, so we can all be ticked off and maybe get the Refugees cut back to $1,012 and the Pensioners up to $2,470. The Dust Bowl Midwife’s Garden. Cimarron County, Oklahoma. 1935. “No Man’s Land.” Driest county in Oklahoma. 4 inches of rain in 3 years. Dr. Sophia “Doc” Grange, 68, was the only doctor for 60 miles. Horse and buggy. Delivered 1,400 babies 1890-1935. In ’35, dust pneumonia took the babies. They couldn’t breathe. No milk — cows died. No water — wells 200 feet down to mud. So Doc Grange dug. Behind her dugout, she had a garden. 10x10 feet. She covered it with wagon canvas. Banked dirt on the sides. Made a cave. Inside: 6 inches of soil she carried from creek beds 5 miles away. In a bucket. One bucket a day for 2 years. She grew greens. Lamb’s quarter. Pigweed. Prickly pear. Weeds, but edible. She boiled them into broth. Added goat milk from the 2 goats she kept in the dugout with her. For 3 years, every baby she delivered got a jar. “Doc Grange’s Green.” County death records: Infant mortality in Cimarron County, 1932: 28%. 1935-1937: 6%. She never charged for the broth. Said: “The earth owes them a start.” She died in 1939. Buried with a mason jar. The Oklahoma Historical Society tested the soil from her garden. It had 3x the nitrogen of surrounding ground. She was composting the dust.
