I’ve been thinking about this piece for a long time.
How did Korea build the world’s most successful pop machine?
The answer is much bigger than choreography, fashion, fandom or social media.
K-Pop’s rise came from a combination of crisis-driven reinvention, export necessity, long-term investment, global artist development, international production networks, fan-community economics and a business model that treats artists as scalable intellectual property.
In this new eight-part series, I break down the system behind K-Pop’s global success — from the collapse of Korea’s traditional record business to BoA, BIGBANG, G-Dragon, BTS, BLACKPINK, global songwriting networks, fandom, AI and the practical lessons artists, managers and labels everywhere can apply.
I also look at an argument I haven’t seen explored enough: while Western labels reduced their focus on boy and girl groups, Korea modernized the format for the global superfan era.
And importantly, I ask what happens next as AI enters a system that was already highly optimized for localization, content, data and international scale.

TODAY at 1PM ET: Cyanite CEO Markus Schwarzler joins the SyncTech Café.
How is AI changing the way we describe, search for and ultimately discover music?
Today I’ll be joined by Markus Schwarzler, CEO of Cyanite, for a conversation about music AI, metadata, search and the future of music discovery.
We’ll talk about how AI can help analyze and organize music, improve metadata, make catalogs more searchable and help people find the right track faster — especially in sync and other professional music workflows.
If you work with music, metadata, licensing, catalogs or discovery, this should be a very useful conversation.

If a music supervisor can’t find your music, it doesn’t matter how good it is.
That’s why metadata matters.
Today at 1PM ET, the Sync Café is taking a practical look at the tools artists, composers, publishers, labels, libraries and sync companies can use to improve the effectiveness and accuracy of their metadata.
We’ll talk about ways to better describe music, improve consistency, identify missing information, enhance discoverability and make catalogs more useful to the people actually searching for music for advertising, film, television, brands and other media.
Because good metadata isn’t just administration.
It’s part of your sales infrastructure.
Better data means better search.
Better search means better matches.
And better matches create more opportunities for your music to get heard and used.
Join us TODAY — Friday, August 14 at 1PM ET.
The Sync Café is free.

Metadata can be the difference between getting heard and getting ignored.
This Friday at the Sync Café, we’re taking a practical look at tools you can use to improve, enhance and verify your music metadata — so your tracks are easier to find, easier to understand and easier for music supervisors and other decision makers to use.
We’ll talk about ways to strengthen descriptive metadata, improve accuracy, organize your catalog and make your music more discoverable when someone is actually looking for it.

**Who owns the music? Who can clear it? And, ultimately, who gets paid?**
Those questions sound simple. In practice, they can get complicated very quickly — especially when music crosses borders.
Today at **1PM ET**, I’ll be joined at the **Sync Café** by **Marek Hojda, Director, Music Export Poland**, for a practical discussion about **music rights, clearances, royalties, metadata and getting paid**.
We’ll look at how rights work internationally, some of the common problems artists and rights holders encounter, what happens when information is incomplete or incorrect, and what creators, publishers, labels and managers can do to better protect their work and their revenue.
And as always with the Sync Café, this isn’t intended to be a lecture. It’s a conversation.
Bring your questions. Join the discussion. Meet some other people working across music and sync.

A great track is only part of the equation.
For music to be licensed and used effectively in sync, it also needs accurate metadata, clear rights information, proper clearance, and a reliable path for payment.
This Friday at 1 PM ET, I’ll be joined on Sync Café by Marek Hodja, Director of Music Export Poland for a conversation about metadata, music rights, clearance, and getting paid.
We’ll talk about:
- why metadata matters in sync
- how rights and clearance affect licensability
- what music users and decision makers need
- how creators and rights holders can improve usability and payment flow
If you work in sync, publishing, rights, licensing, supervision, or music tech, this should be a useful discussion.

Great music is only useful for sync when the people licensing it can understand it, clear it and use it.
This Friday’s Sync Café is all about the information and rights that make music truly licensable:
Metadata. Music rights. Clearance.
We’ll look at what sync decision makers need to know before they can place a track—and the common gaps that can cause strong music to be overlooked, delayed or rejected.
Join us for a practical conversation about making your music easier to find, evaluate, clear and license.

GEMA vs. Suno: a major defeat for generative AI in Germany.
The Munich Regional Court has ruled against Suno, finding copyright violations connected to both the training of its AI model and the generation of songs resembling protected works.
The ruling sends a clear message: the use of copyrighted music to train commercial AI systems is not automatically free, and rights holders must be licensed and compensated.
For artists, composers and rights holders, this is a significant step. For anyone working in sync, it is also a warning: music created or processed through legally questionable generative AI systems may carry serious clearance and litigation risks.
Generative AI is not going away. The real question is whether the industry can build a licensing and remuneration model that works for creators, rights holders and AI companies alike.

The Sync Café is returning.
We originally launched the Café in March 2020 as a five-day-a-week online gathering place for the music and media community. Over the next several years, it became a space for hundreds of interviews, discussions, listening sessions, tutorials and informal conversations.
Starting Friday, July 31 at 1PM ET, the Sync Café returns with a new twice-weekly schedule:
Mondays will focus on technology, including AI, metadata, rights, platforms, workflows and the tools changing music and media.
Fridays will explore music, sync, careers, industry issues and the broader subjects affecting our community.
The format may be evolving, but the purpose remains the same: bringing people together to exchange ideas, build relationships and learn from one another.
The Sync Café is where the sync community meets between the Summits.
