Then, in July 2023, Collins voted to fund 83 more F-35 fighter jets. And here's what makes this particularly troubling: Collins wasn't just another senator. She was the top Republican on the Senate subcommittee overseeing defense appropriations. When lawmakers overseeing billions in taxpayer spending receive substantial campaign contributions from people employed by the companies benefiting from that spending, how can the public be confident that decisions are being made solely in the national interest? Americans deserve transparency, accountability, and a defense budget driven by military needs, not campaign fundraising.
