Great weekend listening for anyone interested in Australia’s think tank landscape!
Hugh White help set up @ASPI_org & became its inaugural head. His legacy of a think tank offering the nation contestability is to his credit.
His telling of ASPI’s creation & the impact of 9/11 within weeks of being established is fascinating.
Great interview, Dave.

The Asia Power Index from @LowyInstitute is always required reading. This year it shows the decline attractiveness of 🇺🇸 throughout the region and the rising importance of 🇨🇳. And warns that the first trend is likely to get stronger.
The Trump administration's policies have been a net negative for US power in Asia, according to the 2025 edition of the @LowyInstitute's Asia Power Index. But their true effect will only be felt in the years ahead.

Launched today: the Asia Power Index shows US power in Asia slumping to its lowest ever level, driven by both structural factors and the Trump administration's policies. 🧵on our key findings follows 1/6
For Australia, the results are a mixed picture. Australia's diplomacy remains highly ambitious, but the underlying economic and military resources required to sustain a more ambitious role, are not growing commensurately. 6/6

To limit China’s domination of Southeast Asia, the United States should strengthen its ties with Vietnam and Thailand—the two countries “on the margins of Beijing’s zone of influence,” argues @SusannahCPatton.
