Apple is taking the UK government to court over a secret order that would require the company to provide access to encrypted iCloud backups for UK users. The UK originally wanted access to encrypted iCloud data from users around the world, but after objections from the US, the request was replaced with a new order that only applies to UK users. Instead of creating a backdoor, Apple removed Advanced Data Protection (ADP) in the UK in February 2025. Without ADP, Apple can access that data and may be required to provide it to authorities if it receives a valid legal request. UK users are currently the only Apple customers in the world who can’t turn on Advanced Data Protection, Apple says creating a backdoor would weaken security for everyone

App Store Accountability Act supporters often cite an 80 page guide to setting up parental controls on an Apple device. Yesterday I interviewed the guy who wrote the 80 page guide and asked him: "if we pass the App Store Accountability Act, will parents be able to throw out your 80 page guide and kids be protected because they were age verified?" The ASAA does not protect kids. It does not empower parents and to quote IT Family Guy..."it's a pile of garbage."
